A Stunning Collection of Guitar Instrumentals,
By
This review is from: Guitar Music (Audio CD)
I have been a long-time fan of solo guitar music: John Fahey, Michael Hedges, Adrian Legg, Preston Reed, Robbie Basho, but Leo Kottke is my favorite. From 1969's "6- And 12-String Guitar" to 1999's "One Guitar, No Vocals," Kottke has released a series of stunning guitar albums. "Guitar Music" was his third all-instrumental outting. I first bought this on LP in 1981, and just now picked it up on CD for a low price from Amazon.com's Bargain Music Dept. Kottke's playing, as always, is spectacular. Whether it's his slide playing on "Part Two," the fingerpicking on the gorgeous "Side One Suite," or the haunting arrangement of "Sleep Walk," Kottke is a master guitar player. All of Kottke's albums are terrific and this is one of his best. RECOMMENDED

Do not hesitate to buy this CD.,

I have to say that of the 15 or so Kottke recordings I have that I enjoy this one the most, and remains that way 19 years after I purchased it in 1980. For better or worse, there are no geese farts on this one. (Kottke once described his voice as "geese farts on a muggy day.") The original compositions are all exquisite, engaging, and often very deep and moving. The covers (tumbling tumbleweeds, sleepwalk, and all I have to do is dream) are made into originals, if I can put it that way. The playing is stellar--emotional, complicated, dense, and sentimental. The recording quality is very good. If you're new to Kottke, start here. If you've got other Kottke and want more, this has to be next on your list.

Possibly Kottke at his best.,

Not too mellow; not too upbeat. Clean and crisp instrumental guitar work. The "Side One Suite" can breathe life back into a weary soul. Simply beautiful.
