Some people may think this CD sounds like "marbles in a blender". I on the other hand, heard nothing of the sort. What I heard was terrific, hard-core Fusion, played by three great musicians. Killer CD. Maybe that person was looking for something different in this CD, possibly Pop, or Top 40 type music. I don't know why you look for this in David Torn. If you like the hard-hitting guitar style of David Torn, you will like this CD, "GTR OBLQ".

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing live performance, truly unique and important, May 25, 2010

This review is from: Guitar Oblique (Audio CD)

I bought and listened to this album endlessly when it came out.

Guitar Oblique is all over the place. I'm a fan of punk, avant-garde, jazz, King Crimson, and Primus -this album touches on all these musical types. For you "rockers" that want something with the guitar up in your face shredding along with a funk rhythm, the track "Xenomorph" is worth the price of the whole CD, this track could reasonably be played on an intelligent rock radio station. The rest of the album is definitely not rock, the listener needs to let it play all the way through and allow the ambient to cast its spell. As far as guitar oriented, this is very mature stuff, way way far from trying show off chops. This is the music of amazing guitarists after they go on to heaven, and don't need or want to posture in any sort of macho way.

It is also unique. Don't assume your collection of jazz fusion, prog rock, or avant noise has an equivalent to this. I have quite a collection myself, and nothing sounds like this CD. These are three amazing, and amazingly odd, guitarists. That they got together and pulled this off live is mind boggling. It is a treasure.
