Brooks' Finest Yet, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Guitar Player (Audio CD)
On first hearing Guitar Player, I was reminded of the impact that John Fahey's 6 & 12 String Guitar had on me 30 years ago. Guitar Player is a breakthrough recording of acoustic music, and Brooks' finest yet. There are a great variety of tunes: fiddle tunes, contemporary classical, gospel, blues, brazilian, and some rearrangements of Brooks' concert standards, all performed brilliantly. The recording has a presence that permits finger noise, guitar overtones, and even the rain, to confirm that you are listening to live music played by a master.
My favorite tunes so far include Far Away, a contradance waltz written Peter Jung; Aguinaldo Jibara, a traditional tune from Puerto Rico, and The Drowsy Bee, an original. Brooks' chord melody arrangements are are usually understated, occasionally flashy; most often they sound "just right."
If you enjoy beautiful acoustic music played on some of the finest acoustic guitars being built today, you won't regret this purchase.
