5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Update! Required Reading for anyone owning a guitar.
Dan Erlewine's latest edition of the Guitar Player Repair Guide is a worthy update. There are numerous additions and updates anyone familiar with the previous editions should check out. If you are new to the guitar, this book is the maintenance and repair guide than will help you maintain your investment, and even give you great tips on how to hod-rod, customize or fix...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish for more detail...
I love Dan's books. He covers a lot of ground on "how" to repair guitars. But... I want to know more about the "why" along with the how. Why a bone nut and not a Tusq nut, why one type of lacquer versus another. etc.
This is an untapped area in the guitar repair book area.
Still love everything Dan does, just wish for more detail...

Dan Erlewine's latest edition of the Guitar Player Repair Guide is a worthy update. There are numerous additions and updates anyone familiar with the previous editions should check out. If you are new to the guitar, this book is the maintenance and repair guide than will help you maintain your investment, and even give you great tips on how to hod-rod, customize or fix your guitar.

The book is organized and logically arranged with Basic, DIY and Deep sections in each chapter. Electric, Acoustic and Bass guitars are all covered with detailed narrative and clear pictures.

Even if you are not up to jobs like fret work or truss rod adjustments, this book will prepare you to talk with your friendly neighborhood guitar repair guy about getting your guitar back to its former glory.

Very highly recommended. Make this your first purchase for your guitar dedicated bookshelf (doesn't everyone have those?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!, April 12, 2008
This review is from: The Guitar Player Repair Guide - 3rd (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. It covers basic to advanced information on a repair as well as great explanations on how to do the repair. I have repaired guitars for years, but had gone away from it for a while. This was a great refresher on some measurements and fine points I had forgotten the specifics of.

When I got my first guitar in 1984 I also got a copy of the most recent Guitar Player magazine. Inside that magazine was a column by Dan Erlewine on guitar repair and maintenance. That column turned out to be the most valuable of all the ones in the magazine. Over the next year, reading Dan's column inspired me to want to learn more about the instrument, how to set it up, repair, maintain and even customize my cheap electric guitar. Over the years, I have built and repaired many guitars for local bands and musicians and the most valuable resources that I have in my library are the magazines with Dan's columns, books he has written and videos he has published. This book is the bible for anyone that wants to know the proper way to string a guitar, stretch strings, tweak and maintain the instrument. I bought this book again to give to my 18 year-old nephew who is interested in helping his friends maintain their instruments and to learn more about them. After just a couple of days of thumbing through it, he told me it was the best book he had ever seen on the guitar. This is the most comprehensive book you will find on this subject and I have bought and read almost all of them. Even if, like me, you own the first or second editions of this book YOU MUST have this edition as well. It has so much more information in it that you will refer back to it no matter how long you work on or play guitar.

Dan works for Stewart-MacDonald Guitar Supply (stewmac.com) and publishes a newsletter called Trade Secrets, which is a wonderful appendix to this book. They also have most of the parts and tools that you need to work on guitars. If you only get one book to learn about taking care of your guitar - THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED!

This has to be the best book of it's kind. Guitar set-up procedures are for individual Guitars, and are taken from the various manufacturers. The author goes into great detail in his explanation of the various procedures of everything from repairs to modifications. I refer to the book almost on a daily basis. He also gives his opinion on different bridges, and other Guitar parts. It's a "Must have" book for every Guitarist.
