Learn Fast and thoroughly,
By Joseph Carera (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guitar Shop : A Beginner's Guide to Learning Lead and Rhythm Guitar (Spiral-bound)
Watson does a good job at explaining the theory behind the material in a manner that's easy to understand. I was surprised at how much ground was covered quickly and how in-depth the information was. Kudos to the author for inventing such a clever system. I learned the chromatic scale and every note name on the fretboard before I had the book a week and did not feel at all overwhelmed! It's a very user friendly book. If I wanted a friend or family member to learn the guitar, I would recommend this book in a heartbeat.

Better Than My Teacher,

Guitar Shop makes the complex simple. After 8 months with a teacher I only learned a few simple "kiddie" songs and how to read notes on a few of the strings. One month with this book and I'm playing songs! What more can I say about that? If you're a beginner, this book is the best one for you.

This is a really good guitar playing instruction book! This book has helped me so much to learn about chord structure, notes and scales. It even showed me the proper way to hold the guitar and how to play chords. Bill teaches you chord progressions, and exercises that are really challenging. But, he lays it all out in an easy way. He doesn't rush through, leaving you behind somewhere. It's written in a way that's easy to understand and follow and I really liked that. He also has online help and tracks you can jam along with which has made learning even more fun! I was very excited to get this book and was not disappointed in any way with it. I think everyone who wants to learn how to play the guitar should have it.

Guitar Shop,

As a beginner guitar player, I did not find this book helpful at all. This is good reading if you are interested in learning theory or history behind the guitar, but if you are interested in learning to play, go elsewhere.

It Helped Me!,
By Tim Sears (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guitar Shop : A Beginner's Guide to Learning Lead and Rhythm Guitar (Spiral-bound)
Guitar Shop helped me learn to play basic chord progressions and understand tabs and a little about notes. I learned barre chords and how to use the blues scale at the book's website along with a lot of other little tips. My friends are surprised at how good I'm playing. I'd say it's a good for total beginners who need to start with the basics. I'm happy with my progress and didn't have a teacher other than the book so I have to recommend it.

Even though I had been playing guitar since 1970, I only knew about a half dozen chords and played only rhythm when I started with this book and the accompanying website. With it I have found the freedom of playing the lead runs I have wanted to play for over 30+ years! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the guitar and will do so.

I haven't played guitar since I wasa kid and wanted a good book to review and also to teach my children. I found Guitar Shop to be the absolute best source of information for both purposes. The step by step process not only teaches, but also stimulates the learning process. I'm looking forward to Guitar Shop II- Steve A.
