This review is from: Guitar Styles of Brownie McGhee (Paperback)
So many times, people just fall through the cracks of choppy bar chords and 5 minute solos. People sometimes forget what music really is. The minute you open this book, things are just different. It doesnt solely tab out how to play blues guitar. In fact, you quickly learn that it really can't be done in this fashion. (80% of the book is composed of 3 chords.) Instead it teaches what the blues are. The majority of the book is actually Sonny talking about the great depression and his philosiphies on life and hardships and pulling through and what it was to be black in the fifties and be blues musician. The book is so personal that you feel as if your sitting on some small porch listening as he smokes his stale newports and tells you about life. He teaches you to take life stretch it out and turn it into a song. This book is probably one of the most profound books I've ever read regarding guitar because it shows that there is so much more beyond getting the right syncopation and notes on a guitar, its about the music itself and the passion it takes to make it. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

This review is from: Guitar Styles of Brownie McGhee (Paperback)
The Guitar Styles of Brownie McGhee is a great introduction to his type
of playing. It's interspersed with commentary by Brownie on the music and
his influences. The book is writen by Happy Traum, who is very sympathetic
to his subject, due to the fact that he was one of Brownies students.
