3.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners September 21, 2012

I have been playing guitar for over 45 years, but due to a medical condition I have to learn a new way to play. I bought this video in hopes of learning how to play a new style but this is definitely NOT for beginners.
It would be alright if you were already an accomplished lead player, but the average player should probably just look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for beginners September 6, 2013

I've played guitar for almost 40 years, but have been playing slide for only about the last 7 or 8, and only on acoustic/resonator. Instructor, Andy Aledort, is one of the best guitar players around, especially when it comes to electric and slide. I know from purchasing other instructional DVDs of his, that they are not usually for beginners. Such is the case with this one. I am fine with that, as so many of these instructional videos are simply so basic, that you have to fast forward through most of the material to get to the 'meat' of the subject. Not with this one, though!

Andy takes you through all the major slide tunings, from open E, D, A and G. He finishes with slide instruction in standard tuning (the most challenging). He gives a little background history of each tuning and names some famous players who use them. Andy then demonstrates examples of the various players/styles, followed by a breakdown of each example.

Also covered is the all-important right hand picking/muting technique which is probably the hardest part of slide playing to master....something I really struggle with. I do wish he had included a few right hand exercises to help with learning this part more effectively.

So, bottom line? I loved this DVD. I "only" give it 4 stars because I think it shouldn't be named "Learn Slide Guitar", which implies a beginner level, instead of intermediate, which is more accurate, IMHO. Again, not a problem for me...just what I was looking for, but could be misleading to others. Also, and this is subjective, but although I love the sound/tone that Andy dialed in on his rig, I found it became a bit irritating after awhile. It would've been better to hear the examples with a bit less overdrive.

I know Andy's DVD will help me get to the next level of electric slide playing. I'm planning on spending many hours with this one!

Slide on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn Slide Guitar August 18, 2013

Very awesome presentation with many achieveable technique development and practice opportunities. Andy Aledort is extremely laid back in his teaching approach but is quite thorough. The pdf downable tab is easy to follow with minimal inconsistencies. Good buy for beginner to intermediate slide players.
