From the Publisher
This guidebook has been popular with music students and music stores since it's first publication in 1996. Although aimed at guitarists, it is popular among many different instrumentalists as a practical discussion of modes and how they can be used to learn to improvise on their instrument. The book includes a chord/scale chart that shows what scales/modes can be played over different chords. Originally written for students having a difficult time understanding what the modes are, the book certainly helps all levels of musician understand this subject more clearly. It goes from easy scales up to much more challenging ones, and we have even heard many guitarists explain that because of the fingerings and notation, it has even helped them learn to read music.
From the Author
This work is dedicated to that great guitarist and mentor, Elias Barreiro, who patiently taught me my first scales in the city of New Orleans, so many years ago. Gracias Maestro! I would be remiss in my gratitude if I were not to thank Mary Margaret Warren, my long time companion, computer tutor and business partner. Words cannot describe how invaluably important her enthusiastic ideas and patient encouragement were to the creation of this work. She is also responsible for helping me port this textbook to an interactive computer software version in HTML available for any computer with a standard web browser and sound card, and for polishing up my programming abilities on the interactive Macintosh Hypercard version. These two products include sound examples and interactive text and buttons for navigating intuitively through the material. Well, I hope you have enjoyed this experience. The subject of scales and their development is an extended lifelong practice. If you've absorbed this small volume you should be well on your way. There are many more scales and books about scales and their use out there. Check them out! My grateful thanks for sharing so much of your time on my efforts. Carlos Barrientos
