This review is from: Guitarra Flamenca paso a paso (I) Flamenco Guitar Step by Step Vol. 1 (DVD)
Out of Spain the most popular methods for Flamenco guitar are probably the Juan Martin and possibly the Gerard Martinez' methods. In Spain by far the most recognized figure of flamenco guitar instruction is without any doubts Oscar Herrero. I would recommend his method to anybody starting on Flamenco guitar that has a basic previous knowledge of chords, bars and a little fingerpicking. Mr. Herrero is very very detailed on his instructions and his method doesn't assume any previous knowledge of flamenco. He by far gives the best simple explanation on rasgueados, picados and use of the pulgar (Thumb) that I have seen on video or anywhere else. It is not as rigid as Mr. Martinez and every detail that he gives about hand position, attack etc is just gold. On this first DVD he goes from how to hold a flamenco guitar to playing a bit of Soleares y Tangos that are the base Palos on 12 and 4 timing and a very solid entry to learn other flamenco palos like Alegrias, Bulerias or Tientos. My only inconvenience and it is minor is the booklet that comes with the DVD and the hand printed notes on it that I would have preferred on a different format larger and clearer but said that is perfectly workable. In a few words if you want to learn real flamenco from the most appreciated and recognized teacher today among the flamencos in Spain this is the guy.
