5.0 out of 5 stars the soul of oldfiled!!!
this is the album i have waited years to hear, finally, mike has given us an album of his guitars, and only guitars, yes!11 all the sounds were generated from guitars and only guitars! you have to listen to "four winds" it is brilliant!!!! laste year's tubular bells III was good, but laked the earthier tone. this album has all of the earthy tone that i would...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Stellar, But Not Awful Either
Oldfield shows some really good work with the thematic instrumentation for this album. However, it lacks a little in the aspect of being something that you will remember beyond hearing it. This is definitely not a Not of This Earth or Surfing With the Alien (Joe Satriani), so don't expect anything along those lines. Definitely not a work that will get you to drive out...

4.0 out of 5 stars Just guitars!, February 28, 2008
This review is from: Guitars (Audio CD)
Mike has made this Album playing all instruments. That is not so very unusual. What is more unusual that only the Guitar is used as instrument. Funny, isn't it?!

The songs on the album are less interesting as numbers on other albums, but that does not mean that this album is not good. To my opinion shall this album be in every Oldfield fan's album collection.

Conclusion: Buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, October 30, 2001
This review is from: Guitars (Audio CD)
I first heard Michael Oldfield at my friend's place (Lord Chimp, check him out, he's cool) Ya, so anyway, I got the slightest hint of a listen to 'tubular bells' (one of his first albums) then a week or so later I was picking up some tunes at the local used record store, and completely by accident stumbled upon a stash of Mike Oldfield CD's. I picked up 'Guitars' and headed home to listen to my new haul. I wasn't dissapointed, Mike Oldfield is an excellent composer of contemplative music, each track has its own special charm. The album consists of soft, underspoken melodies that lift you up from wherever you are and carry you to brand new places. On a few songs, most notably Embers and Muse, there are a couple of those notes which just ring out clear and dominant, and leave you breathless. You know the ones I'm talking about, the ones where you're waiting for it to come, and when it does, your just like: "Nice". If you happen by it on your musical travels, I certainly would recommend it.

Cheers

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special......................after great expactation, April 23, 2003

I was really excited when i heard that he is recording a total guitar album.Mike is surely one of the best guitarists/bassists in the world and i just love the tone if his red stratocaster.
Well he plays very well in here but.......his composer talent has dissapeared somewhere.only three tracks are worth of buying it."ENIGMATISM" "FOUR WINDS" and "COCHISE".First is a "hergest ridge" styled acoustic piece, dark and beautifull. One of his best from nineties."COCHISE" is a hard-electro-rock track with angry electric guitars in chorus and wonderfull acoustic part.Mike has done it the best as he can."Four WINDS" is an epic ten minutes long tale, with very stunning guitar solos and some oriental and Western-tasting parts. Not as wonderfull as "TAURUS II" but still as exciting as it should be.Three tracks out of ten is not to many for me.His Hard rock/metal pieces ("OUT OF MIND") or sad acoustic ballads ("SUMMIT DAY") are as boring and typical as you never imagined.REALLY, I AM SORRY OLDFIELD.Three stars only for three great tracks

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent work from Mike, May 5, 2011

Mike Oldfield is a talented musician, of that there is no doubt. His guitar work is especially impressive so how wonderful we are treated with a whole work dedicated to that skill. The songs in and of themselves are enjoyable, but it is the overall work which I found the most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guitar(s)-mania!, January 13, 2001

This review is from: Guitars (Audio CD)
This is a pretty good CD from Mike. Everything you hear are Guitars. This is a pretty quiet disc except Out Of sight, Four Winds and Out Of Mind. I like Mike when he's on the rock-side. If you like Mike Oldfield and have a thing for guitars, then this is the CD for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Boring!!, November 7, 2001
This review is from: Guitars (Audio CD)
I know that Mike created all the sounds you hear on this CD using various guitars, but that doesn't excuse the fact that this is simply not up to his usual standards. There are a couple of standouts...but as a whole, it's just average. Here's hoping Mike comes back with an album towards the "Five Miles Out" or "Discovery" vein....

This album has some very nice melodies. This ins not so brilliant albus as Amarok or Song of Distant Earth, but it is still one of better Mike's albums.

Oh, by the way, all music on the album is played on guitars! No other instrument.
