Denise Franke's "Gulf Coast Blue" is stunningly excellent. Not familiar with her music, I was attracted to the CD because of its producer Mark Hallman who worked with Carole King in the 70s as part of the band Navarro and has continued to do great work on discs like One Thing Right by Matt the Electrician. Hallman may have brought me to the disc, but Franke glues my ears with her incredible songs and the emotional punch of her music. Raised in Dallas, recorded in Austin, I guess we have to assign "Country" as the genre, but that hardly expresses the great music contained. The opener "Gibraltar" is a midtempo charmer with Andre Moran's haunting electric lead guitar and Franke's vocals entrancing, "Shine some light if you're still standing; Shine some light if you're breathing still." What a great track! "Harley Girl" follows with a driving rock track on a super song, "From the sun spilling out on the coastal plains to a fire in a Juarez sky & the stars in the sky like the fourth of July." The slower "Weather is Fine" follows, a lovely folk melody and Franke's vocals touching, "Love is tender; Love is cruel; One minute you're the ace & the next you're the fool." "Moments" is another lovely track where the arrangement builds adding instruments, "Her skirt whips like liberty & when you think there's no redemption, boys, you better step out in the street." "Seminole Girl," "Tara Lee" & "Elegance" are also exquisite. "Gulf Coast Blue" is amazingly consistent from start to finish. Enjoy!
