I downloaded this free version of GT so that my Kindle would read it to me on a recent road trip. I'm teaching a college-level class and included the whole text of GT and didn't want to waste time while I was driving 14 hours when I could be reading/lesson preparing for my class. ALAS, this version is CENSORED and only HALF of the book! I am so disappointed that this isn't advertised anywhere. This Kindle edition includes Part I (Lilliput) and Part II (Brobdingnag) ONLY. It is missing Part III (Laputa &c.) and Part IV (Land of Houyhnhynms). Unbelievable. The censorship is ridiculous, too. Beware, you're getting the child-proof version of this classic.

We read this for book club and I did not realize there were 2 more parts of the story missing, felt a little foolish, wished I would have realized it was not complete.

THIS REVIEW SPECIFICALLY FOR THE KINDLE EDITION--

I was disappointed with the formatting on this classic. At least on my Kindle Fire, the footnote and endnote shortcuts seem to malfunction. Some bad line breaks and lots of small annoying things contribute to an overall less than satisfactory experience.

But it is free.

This book does not have the full text since it only includes books one and two. It is also heavily censored, excluding whole paragraphs otherwise present in the audiobook. I would recommend the gutenberg library copy over this one since they are both free...

It's a "classic" for good reasons. If you keep in mind when this was written, it is remarkable how well it has held up over time. It remains a well told story with interesting flourishes, and the underlying social and political satire is just as on the mark now as it was in 1726. Also worth a read just to think about where the genres of science fiction and fantasy writing started. Think about the "founding fathers" of the American Revolution possibly having copies of this book on their shelves when the US was still a loose collection of British colonies-- and what it says about nationalities, the power of Kings, and the ways people treat each other.

The book begins with a short preamble in which Lemuel Gulliver, in the style of books of the time, gives a brief outline of his life and history before his voyages. He enjoys travelling, although it is that love of travel that is his downfall. During his first voyage, Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people, less than 6 inches tall, who are inhabitants of the island country of Lilliput. After giving assurances of his good behaviour, he is given a residence in Lilliput and becomes a favourite of the court. From there, the book follows Gulliver's observations on the Court of Lilliput. He is also given the permission to roam around the city on a condition that he must not harm their subjects. Gulliver assists the Lilliputians to subdue their neighbours, the Blefuscudians, by stealing their fleet. However, he refuses to reduce the island nation of Blefuscu to a province of Lilliput, displeasing the King and the court. Gulliver is charged with treason for, among other crimes, "making water" (urination) in the capital, though he was putting out a fire and saving countless lives. He is convicted and sentenced to be blinded, but with the assistance of a kind friend, he escapes to Blefuscu. Here he spots and retrieves an abandoned boat and sails out to be rescued by a passing ship, which safely takes him back home. This book of the Travels is a topical political satire.

When the sailing ship Adventure is blown off course by storms and forced to sail for land in search of fresh water, Gulliver is abandoned by his companions and found by a farmer who is 72 feet (22 m) tall (the scale of Brobdingnag is about 12:1, compared to Lilliput's 1:12, judging from Gulliver estimating a man's step being 10 yards (9.1 m)).

This is a schoolbook, thoroughly sanitized and halved for some reason. Why this is included here with no mention of this fact is beyond me.

This is a classic, and good to read if you're interested in literature, especially in the classical adventure novel era. How can you really say that you love western literature if you haven't read a classic like this? Considering that it was written in 1726, Gulliver's Travels is surprisingly funny and relatable. Lots of political/social commentary, as was typical in novels of that era, and all with a tongue-in-cheek tone.
