4.0 out of 5 stars Great Alternative to Otterbox, July 22, 2011
When I first got my iPad 2 as a birthday present I searched for days looking for a case that would seriously protect it. I looked at the otterbox case but it got pretty awful reviews so I ended up getting this one instead. It turned out to be a great purchase. It only took me a minute or two to put it on and it holds together very well. There's some slight squeaking of the plastic along the right side in one area on mine that occurs whenever you pick the iPad up but it doesn't really bother me. The only downside of this case, which some of the other reviews have pointed out, is that the silicon part covering the home button sticks occasionally. In order to make it click the actual home button again you have to pry that silicon piece up and then gently push it back in. Overall this isn't that big of a deal for me because it only sticks every now and again and it takes a whole of half a second to fix it but it is a slightly annoying occurrence for such an expensive case. It does add substantial weight but that kind of goes with this kind of case's territory. Even with its few problems it gives me piece of mind about potentially dropping it (even though I haven't do to the grippy covering) which is all I really wanted in an iPad case.

Also, A+ for Gumdrop customer service. I sent them an email about the home button sticking and 10 minutes later they emailed me back. They're releasing a version 2 of this case that fixes the home button sticking issue, (on August 28th I believe), and are sending me one to replace the one I have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gumdrop Miltary, June 7, 2011
By
This review is from: Gumdrop Drop Tech Military Edition Case for Apple iPad 2, Army Green (DS-IPAD2-ARGRN-V2) (Personal Computers)
The Gumdrop folks are all over the net talking about this thing, and hey, it really is a great case. Easy to hold onto, feels super solid and I have no doubt that it will protect my iPad. I have the "military" green model and I'm not 100% sure the extra $10 is worth it, but I'm very pleased overall and I did notice that there is a fabric "filter" over the speaker opening that should keep dust out as advertised. It's a rugged case, it will add bulk, but that's the name of the game in this type of case.

Now there is going to be a ton of comparison to the Otterbox. For me the thing what pushes this case past theirs are the channels in the plastic part of the case to hold the rubber in place. I've had many of the Otterbox cases for my iPhones over the years and that has been my one gripe. I also really like the "snap-in" screen protector because it is easy to replace.

Very good protection, the only thing I might add would be an actual cover of some sort for the screen that would protect it when not in use. Otterbox really got that part right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gumdrop vs Griffin Survivor, December 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I needed an iPad case that would stand up to abuse, and narrowed my choices to the Gumdrop Drop Tech and the Griffin Survivor cases.

I bought both to test out, intending to return the weaker of the two. The poor reviews of the Otterbox for iPad 2 removed it from the shootout.

Both feature rubber outers with flaps covering switches, dock and headphone jacks, a plastic core surrounded the iPad 2, and a integrated screen cover. They both cost about the same as time of writing ($50-60).

Gumdrop Pros:
Strong accessory flaps (dock, headphone, mute switch)
functional tire texture on the back side allows you to hold on to it without slippage

Gumdrop Cons:
several open ports (both cameras, microphone, speaker), making it not entirely water resistant
not a full poly carb shell, only front
no included accessory to stand it up
rubber has no stick to it, it's smooth (it's up to the tire texture to give you grip)

Griffin Survivor Pros:
better water resistance (flaps cover everything except front facing camera)
full poly carb shell
Rubber texture has more stick to it

Griffin Survivor Cons:
incredibly flimsy and weak accessory flaps
included stand is flimsy

Washes:
Screen covers are about the same quality. The Gumdrop one is apparently user replaceable though.
Front and back iPad protection
Looks (neither will win beauty contests)

My choice:
Gumdrop, even though it's probably a little less durable in extreme conditions.

So why the Gumdrop when it's con list is longer than the Survivors? My biggest concern about the Survivor is that the flaps would eventually break, their linkages feel that weak.

For everyday use, I think both would fare fine.
