This is an excellent book. He has done what he stated in the intro. He has pretty much covered maintaining and repairing guns from A-Z. This is a great book for beginners as well as experience gun owners of all ages. It is written in an easy to read format. At an easy to understand level.
The book is a must have for any gun owners library.

I enjoyed Larry Lyons book, written as it was from the point of view of long experience. My interest is in routine care of my firearms to prolong their useful/accurate life, and do modest restoration work rather than teaching me to be a gunsmith, so it will form a valuable addition to my library.

This is my first book about handgun maintenance, i own two semi automatic handguns (9mm. & .45) and i found this book very enlightment because i mainly use one for practice and the other one usually stays on my closet waiting for its call of duty.
This book shows you how to clean and preserve any kind of gun and whatever your use it for. But if you just own handguns you will only need about the 50% of it, because the other 50% is focus on hunting rifles and shootguns. If you are looking just for the basics on cleaning and maintenance this book is suitable for you and also if want to dig deeper onto gun repairing and tuning, its also a great choice. But if added to that, you are a profesional hunter, this book its a must on you home library or you backpack.

Although I will walk away from this book with a few new ideas/techniques, I am still disappointed. Where I feel the author failed, was in his lack of enough clearly labeled diagrams (eg identification of key friction parts of a bolt/action, and where to lube them). What photos are there, are mostly useless and appear only to fill space in the book. I do not doubt the author's expertise, but I'm afraid he was not able to convey that in this book.

don't expect sophisticated writing style. Easy to read, at times, can be too wordy. A lot of info, especially for beginners like myself. A must for beginning collector of firearms

It may be my fault, but I though the book would have information on taking apart different types of guns. But no luck.
But if you do want a book to tell you how to clean a weapon, this is it.

I needed something to help me understand how to clean some new guns I had just acquired. All I had to that point was a .22 pistol and rifle. It taugh me how to disassemble and clean my new purchases.

So glad I bought this book! Lyons's book is a comprehensive, plain-language guide for keeping any firearm from a revolver to an AR-15 in tip-top shape. I've already found great advice for cleaning up my milsurp rifles.

The how and why of maintaining handguns, rifles, and shotguns for reliability, safety, and accuracy are the author's paramount concerns, and his recommendations are sound, clearly justified, and presented in useful detail. The appendix has a list of dealers who can supply the necessary tools and other supplies, a very thoughtful idea by the author. He also clears away many misconceptions the amateur has about gun maintenance.
You will need to spend some cash --- but far less than you would spend for the repair of a single handgun --- for the necessary supplies, and you will need a good workbench with good lightning and a certain amount of storage space. At first the maintenance he recommends will seem time-consuming, but you need devote only a little time each week to gun maintenance duties and still keep your guns safe and accurate. The most troublesome duty will be "shooting in" a new rifle, which could take two weeks of brief trips to a rifle range, but (according to the author) this could halve the diameter of your target groups. He speaks from experience and provides clear and cogent reasons to support his suggestions, both in the "shooting in" process and for maintenence in general. I regard this book as an essential part of my literature on gun maintenance and safety. |
