Amazon.com Review

A rudimentary 2-D fighting game loosely based on several of the Gundam Japanese animated series and movies, Gundam Battle Assault isn't the game that fans would have hoped for, and is definitely not for casual gamers who don't know what the heck a Gundam is. The game's one-on-one combat is between giant robots known as "mobile suits." They can fly up into the air--the screen scrolls vertically to follow the action, providing a little extra headroom in the cramped 2-D arenas--but there's really nothing about the gameplay here that you haven't seen before and played ad nauseam.

Originally released in Japan in 1998, Gundam Battle Assault definitely reeks a bit upon its stateside arrival two years later. While the graphics and sound are certainly colorful and mostly faithful to the animated shows, they are unremarkable at best, and, compared to more recent games in the fighting genre, this title is about as bare bones as they come in terms of features, options, and extras. Only two modes of play are available: the requisite two-player versus mode, and a one-player story mode that follows a poorly scripted plot sure to confound Gundam saga newbies and irritate veteran fans with its illogical absurdity. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Features characters and mobile suits from the various Gundam cartoons
Cons:
  • Uninspired gameplay
  • Unremarkable graphics and sound
  • Minimal game features, options, and extras
  • Story mode's poorly scripted plot will either confound or irritate fans

4.0 out of 5 stars Gundam Wing Game Review, November 13, 2000
This review is from: Gundam Battle Assault (Video Game)
Now, let's get one thing straight right off the bat. I have NOT played this game, but I have heard a lot about it. Yes, the game does have all of the main characters from the U.S. hit Gundam Wing. Originally, when the game came out in Japan, it starred other Gundam characters, but was redesigned for the United States. That is one reason it has taken so long to get here. The only draw-back that I can find is that the game is not 3-D, like Gundam Side Story, but 2-D like older fighting games or arcade games. But I don't think that the fact that it's a two-dimensional game will affect the game play or quality. Other than that, I have heard that the graphics are great and pretty realistic. What I mean by realistic is that the Gundams do not all move fast and smoothly...they move how a big hunk of metal (or Gundanium, for that matter) would move. Some are faster than others, while some have more fire power. All in all, the pros and cons equal out. This game sounds like a lot of fun and a real blast!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gundam Battle Assault (Video Game)
This game is great!!!!! It has many gundams to choose from. This game is easy to get into and has lots of replay value if you and a friend try to recreate those classic Gundam battles. The only Gundam Wing characters in it are Heero Yuy and Treize. The only Gundam from Gundam Wing in there is Wing 0. I know about all the Gundam series so I know all the the Gundams. My favorite Gundam is GP02A Physallis he is so cool!. It has great graphics and gameplay. Some people complain that the Gundams move too slow but they are giant robots. The creators just wanted to make it as real as possible. It may seem boring to some gamers but it is a good game, especially when playing with a friend. If you like the old Gundam series and fighting with giant mechs. If you love Gundam you should get this game.
