Editorial Reviews

The second and maybe best of the Rough Riders series, this time they are after a gang rustlers. A great period western. (1941; B&W)

These three stars typify what 40's westerns should be and were! Along with the Range Busters and the Trai Blazers, the Rough Riders ruled the western roost until the death of Buck Jones - everyone's hero.

Great old western movie, brought back many memories. They do not make movies like this anymore where everything is not so realistic and you have to use your imagination. Always some humor in the movie.

A great Rough Riders western. Both Tim McCoy and Buck Jones had been stars for sometime but as their individual stars diminished they were teamed with Raymond Hatton in a series of movies. Buck Jones of course died in the Coconut Grove fire. I think they always made the best trio of western good guys. In this one they are out defeat some rustlers and save ranchers. It is Monogram picture, made in the closing era of the "B" western studios. Good action with some familiar bad guys. Col. Tim McCoy still looks stately and has the fast draw and piercing eyes. A little older than most of western stars of that time but they still shine brightly.

I'm a fan of Tim McCoy, but Buck Jones gets the best screen time as an undercover Marshall who infiltrates a gang of rustlers. Veteran bad guy Charles King has brief role as the chief of the bandits. Not much shooting considering the start. Jones comes upon a ranch following an outlaw raid. He finds husband and wife dead with a note identifying one of the rustlers. He also finds a baby. I don't remember anyone else getting killed. It's just over an hour so that lack of solid characters is not too telling. I wouldn't buy it, but I would watch it again. It's available as an amazon prime item.

A decent outing for The Rough Riders. Buck Jones and Tim McCoy get most of the attention. I didn't even realize the third Rough Rider was a member, as his character provides weak comic relief as a horrible cook. The opening where Buck finds a house in a storm is atmospheric, adding a nice sense of dread. Buck poses as an outlaw, McCoy poses as a federal agent out to get Buck in an effort to track down rustlers.

In its day "The Rough Riders" was a very popular western series. This particular earlier installment was especially entertaining with western icon stars Tim McCoy and Buck Jones who went on to perform several more in the successful series.

Reminds me of the good old days as a kid watching Covered Wagon Theater on Saturday mornings. Great cowboys film for those who like the old black and white flicks
