4.0 out of 5 stars Its Half-Life but in the future
... This is a great game in the tradition of Half-Life but still falls short of the greatness which Half-Life attained. I guess then I should start off with why I gave it 4 stars instead of five.

I became a big fan of Valve's work when I played Half-Life, which had an involved story-line that seamlessly blended the action with the plot. Although Gunman Chronicles has a pretty weak story line, it still managed to keep me interested. ... This is a great game in the tradition of Half-Life but still falls short of the greatness which Half-Life attained. I guess then I should start off with why I gave it 4 stars instead of five.

First the game is still based on the HL engine. While still being a good engine to use it is starting to show its age. HL came out about 2-3 years ago and FPS engines have had a drastic over haul in that time. The game still looks great and plays great though.

Secondly the levels are a little too short for me. I played it for a couple hours last night and I am already on the 3rd planet. The box says that there are 4 immense worlds to explore and well I haven't done much exploring to say the least and the worlds are not immense at that. Hopefully the 4th world will be a little bigger. Ya the story line is a little hokey but its better than many I have seen.

Well other than those two gripes the game shines. Each of the weapons has several functions with situations calling on your use of those various functions sometime throughout each level. The enemies are quite varied and fit in with the planet and its surroundings and their AI is pretty good.

I should say that I haven't played online yet with it so I am not going to comment on its multiplayer functions yet so this review may seem a little premature but I was here and what the hey...I wrote it.

Overall this is a fun game and if you like HL and Unreal then you will enjoy this game....

The graphics are what you would expect from Half-Life, with a few new features, like cutomizable weapons and a tank you can drive. The down side is, the game is VERY short. I beat the game in less than fifteen hours of game time. I'm quite disappointed. This would get a stronger rating if it weren't for the length.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gunman, November 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
To start off, the game uses the Half-Life engine and the HL AI. Which is not a bad thing since HL put the gaming community on it's ear a few years back, with it's great game. So pretty much this is HL just with different story and setting, like I said that is the good thing. There are some points about the game that no one else has pointed out. The biggest to me is the game is just to short. HL took me 3 weeks to complete, Gunman 8 hours. This has happened to me twice now with add ons to HL, and that is pretty much what Gunman is, an add on. The other problem with the game is a texture problem. This does not affect the game, but do expect a patch in the near future. The last complaint is the fact that the story seems a little weak. You really never get to know who you are in the game, or who the Gunman really are. Once again this does not affect the game play, but does affect the way you feel about the character. What I did like about the game was the gun layout. You have a good array of weapons that can be configured to your liking. This is a good idea because of the fact of only being able to carry so many things. This way your laser gun can become a sniper riffle with the right model add on. Now you can use the right weapon for the right job and do it on the fly with just the click of the mouse. I also like the fact of being able to drive a tank from time to time in the game. This gives you a nice brake from running and shooting all the time. Okay so I gave it 3 stars, will mostly because it was so short. I do not like the thought of game companies throwing a few levels into a game and just not taking the time to make a fun experience, just to make money. If you have not played Half Life, GO now and buy it and see for yourself what Gunman should have been. Also if you want a great game try Deus Ex, loads and loads of fun and game play there.

4.0 out of 5 stars U can still play it online multiplayer, July 1, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
The clans are still playing it, but because the old WON servers are now defunct, you will need a Steam account to play multiplayer online. If you have a Halflife game, then you probably already have the Steam account. I am telling you this because this game is no longer supported by the company and its servers are gone forever. Once you install Gunman normally, to play multiplayer online all you have to do is this:

Open up your Programs folder where Gunman is installed (probably C:/Sierra/Gunman), and look for the folder called "Rewolf." Then just copy that folder to your Steam programs folder where all your other Steam games are listed. For example, my address to the Steam folder looks like this:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\jokerfunny

"jokerfunny" is my account name in Steam. Also, something no one told me, is that for me I had to open Steam and click on Games in the Menu and then select Activate Product on Steam. Then I had to enter my Gunman cd code. Once I did that and restarted Steam, Gunman showed up immediately. It did not show up just because I copied the Rewolf folder to the address above, but others swear it will so it might for you.
You need to make sure you have your regular Halflife game installed and showing in Steam before you do any of the above.

It sounds like alot, but it took me less than 4 minutes, and now I can play this great game with one of the original first person shooter communities ever! Yes, Gunman was out there right with Duke Nukem, but Gunman was way ahead of its time. Deathmatch maps are still everywhere on the internet and the clans are still designing new ones. Believe it or not!!

2.0 out of 5 stars National Lampoon's Half Life, June 14, 2001
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
Gunman is a..clone of half life. The graphics and sound are dated, it's short, buggy and.., the AI is good but it uses half life's AI. It should be called National Lampoon's half life or Carry on half life.

Gunman Chronicles is a first person shooter created on the Half Life build engine. Almost everything from the graphics, sound effects and the interface is the same as Half Life, When minimised to the tray the tray bar says Half Life. The storyline in gunmen is heavily inspired by Half Life and System Shock II, You play Major Archer of the gunman force, Gunmans are a kind of soldiers who battle against aliens, Years ago some gunmen fought a battle against an alien invation and their general was killed in that battle. That is before the game starts and now five years later the aliens are back and now you must take your troops and destroy the alien life forms, And surprise. You have to explore four different planets before meeting the final baddie, The A.I in gunmen is very good and like system shock II a computer AI will help you along. On your way you have to fight gaurds dressed like cowboys, Dinos, Aliens, Crocodiles, Shoot a copter with a rocket launcher, Drive a tank ect, You would meet scientist also but they will not help you sometimes they might attack you. Gunmen has some nice twist and turns to keep you intrested in the single player experiance, Just like half life the game starts with you taking a train ride but you need to take a training course before advancing to the main game. A training level in games is really great but that being a must and making it a part of the story and as if the training is for the main charecter is very silly, because the instructor says "Press your use key", things like that. The bad things in GC is that it is quite short and liner, The graphics are also bad and dated. Gunman has a lot of weapons and almost all of them have four types of firing but most of them are not intresting, The voice acting is not as good as half life. The ending is quite disappointing, I didnt expect the final showdown to be this easy and after what happenes in the final battle i felt that major archer is not the hero of the game something else is and all this time i was playing the hero's sidekick. The big boss is very disappointing i expected some other monstor to be the final baddie. And that it is so similar to Half Life that you could call it Half Life : Gunman Chronicles. Even though gunman has nothing new and quite dissapointing, It is great to see amatures create a game like this.

This game rocks!! If you loved Half-Life you'll love this game. In my opinion it is at least as good as, if not better than Half-Life. Superb graphics/sound & storyline to keep you on the edge of your seat consistently.

3.0 out of 5 stars This should never have been published., February 8, 2001
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
Shocking words aren't they? You'll have to read my explanation carefully before you go off crying.

The game is great! There is absolutely no doubt about it. The levels sport some phenomenally high levels of detail, as well as careful attention to texture placement. (Half-Life had some badly misaligned textures) The new enemies are carefully thought out and nicely detailed. Everything that needed to be done right was certainly done right here.

Except for a few gripes. Beginning with the game's length. The game is too short to justify spending $39.99 ($29.99 with rebate as of this writing) ReWolf developed this game, not Valve. Before Sierra approached this team of developers for publishing rights, ReWolf wasn't even a team of professional developers, most of them were amateurs like you and me. A group of people who loved the game so much that they decided to get together to make their own levels to play. I'm too good of a game player to have a game as short as this to last me any reasonable time. Coupled with too linear levels the game just rushes by. How many distinct areas are there? Three, four? I don't know, it all went by so fast. So what would have ReWolf done if Sierra didn't approach them? Same thing that every one else would have done. Post it on their webpage and become one of the hottest downloads since Team Fortress Classic or They Hunger.

The game pulls some amazing stunts with a drivable tank and an attacking dinosaur but there was never enough. How much more could ReWolf have added to the game if the free roving tank was better utilized? Could ReWolf have added a "free roving" space craft? With the awesome skill of including the tank why were the levels so darn straight forward? It didn't matter that I sometimes had no clear idea of what was happening, there was only one direction to go in. Why was the "training" session so short? The learning curve and the control adjustment for better utilizing the multi-weapons are a bit sharper than usual. The game is like high school love. It flares in intense passion for only a short while and when it finally goes away, there's an empty void, and you're left desperately looking for something else to fill that void. Remember this game has quality not quantity. Which one do you want?

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, December 22, 2000
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
This is definetly a step back for Sierra. This game seemed to have all the annoying parts of half-life plus a few of it's own. Half Life is a great game, but it's engine does have some problems. This game seemed to be incomplete or like corners were cut to get it out for Christmas.

I finished this game in less than a week and I didn't really spend that much time on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars WORTH PLAYING!!!!, September 15, 2004
This review is from: Gunman Chronicles (CD-ROM)
If you liked half life then this game is worth playing. Its pretty much a remake of the half life engine.the story is good along with the old wild west type environments and themes.the enemies, xenomes, desperados are original and that makes gunman a hyper powered half life.the best level is the last cause you fight in outer space on the surface of an alien wild west planet.my only con is the lack of guns although the rocket launcher is pretty cool.overall this game is worth buying......that is if you are a half life fan!!!
