A Gunn for Life, December 10, 2001

This is the second Russel Gunn cd i've listen to and i'm impressed by is work. I think he is a gifted compositor and his band smokes:Stefon Harris, Greg Tardy and James Hurt are amazing. Just listen to the first track "gunn fu" or to "the search" and you will know what i'm talking about. there is a gunn proving once more that there are no need for samples or electronics to be funky. in a minute he's grooving then he's swinging in that hard bop style. Gunn knows the jazz legacy too: just listen to his version of Master Miles Davis "Solar" or to "Minor Sweet" in wich he blows a phrase that would make you recall ol'Satchmo.
I also have Gunn's "love Requiem". But i'm about to buy all is records because a thing that his underrated. Russel Gunn, Rodney Kendrick, and Ben Allison are the Triangle Offense of the Jazz Music in the present. Peace.
