Book Description

You wouldn't know it to look at current sales figures, but the gun business is in deep, long-term trouble. Young people have no discernible interest in firearms. They want to be urban and digital, and guns are the exact opposite. Lots of guns are being sold, but they're being sold to the same shrinking group of white, rural, middle-aged men. Twenty years from now, American gun culture could be all but gone.
One gun is bucking the trend: the AR-15, the civilian version of the military's M-16. It's the only gun with a visible consumer future; it's the lifeline to which the gun business clings. This black-plastic rifle has the potential to upend not only our national gun culture, but our national gun politics.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

At a shooting range in Denver, Dan Baum is introduced to America's most popular gun, the AR-15. Classified as a "modern sporting rifle" (a euphemism for assault rifle), the AR-15 is the semi-automatic, civilian version of the military's M-16. It's easy to see why the AR-15 is so popular. It can be modified and tricked out with different scopes, sights, and barrels--even the caliber can be changed. From his conversations with gun-store owners and enthusiasts, Baum identifies the same techie enthusiasm you find in a lot of hobbies. Baum, a former New Yorker staff writer and author of Hurricane Katrina narrative Nine Lives, unpacks gun tradition, the uncertain future of the industry ("If buying habits hold steady, the gun business will be all but gone in about twenty years"), and the twisty political implications of gun ownership. Guns Gone Wild is a swift, percipient look at American gun culture and commerce. --Kevin Nguyen

1.0 out of 5 stars Biased Publication September 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The author is hell bent on stereo-typing responsible gun owners into certain races, political affiliations and has an all too obvious motive: reduce the number of gun owners. An assault rifle is a firearm capable of fully automatic fire. An AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle only, it does not shoot full auto. The term sporting rifle is not a euphemism for assault rifle, this is what the media, and Dan Baum, have gotten incorrectly for decades.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not well written or researched. September 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The real facts do not support this book. Shooting sports is gaining ground among young people in this country despite all the obstacles and bias out there. Interest in firearm based personal protection and self defense along with training is at an all time high especially among women.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously? September 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Seriously? I just became interested in firearms for the second time in my life. As a young girl I used to shoot with my Dad and brother. Now as an adult woman I truly enjoy going to the range. I am not the stereo typical gun person. Not only that, I run into people from all over the country from all walks of life while I am at the range.

This book is not based on hard facts. By the way, the AR is not just a black plastic riffle. LOL.

This is more of a magazine length article, but worth the 99 cent price. A good indication to the same author's forthcoming book.

An honest discussion about guns and the folks that use them. Don't be put off by the negative reviews the article revived from gun users, who seem to be their own worst PR folks. Read more
