Editorial Reviews

Review

"Guns of Outlaws chronicles the misdeeds of many of America's worst miscreants, with special emphasis on the tools of the outlaw trade. After reading Guns of Outlaws, I was left with one main takeaway. Regardless of the era, evildoers always have, and always will, find a way to get their hands on the most potent weapons of the day to carry out their dirty deeds. And regardless of the era, only equally well armed good guys can take them down." - American Rifleman

"Historians Gerry and Janet Souter take the reader back to a time between 1840 and 1940 when men and women traveled an imaginary twisting outlaw path, the "Owlhoot Trail," where outlaws and man hunters lived bold and died hard. In their new book, Guns of Outlaws - Weapons of the American Bad Man, the pages show actual tools of the trade wielded during a violent century, bound up in a mix of hard truths and mythology. The only solid reality left behind are these trusted relics, aged and showing holster wear with salt-etched pits from sweaty gun powder-stained hands." - Ammoland.com

My wife purchased this work and gave it to me as an early Christmas present. As a long time amateur historian I had studied the lives of early American criminals and law men on more than one occasion. I never felt there was a great deal to add to what I had already learned, but I was wrong.

"Guns of Outlaws" is one of those rare works that gives the reader added insight into the men on both sides of the law during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The Souters in their quest for accuracy allow the reader, perhaps for the first time, a genuinely historically faithful look at the make, caliber, type (knife, rifle, handgun, etc...), and quantity of weapons that were carried, used, then left behind by some of the most notorious and admired characters in American history. In so doing, the authors give us an equally rare look into the personalities, thinking and lives of these historical figures while leading the reader to the inescapable conclusion of the deadliness of their actions and/or their chosen professions.

The authors, Gerry and Janet Souter, also challenge the traditional thinking concerning what weapons were preferred by these early Americans, but more importantly they give us why each was favored. This scholarly work is designed to capture, inform, and challenge the reader; as such it accomplishes that task in a superior fashion using a direct easy to read format including pictures, and diagrams, coupled with detailed explanations of terms used.

Got this book a short time ago and started to read it and found that I could not stop. The information and history provided is just beyond what I expected. The book is a must read for anyone into American history or the wild west. Yes even the stuff about the mafia is great.

Cobbled together mostly from internet research. A few pictures of guns, but mostly of guns "of the sort" used by the actual outlaws. Few pictures of the actual guns belonging to outlaws. Little information or history that is not known to someone who has even a casual interest in the subject. The tone of the book is condescending in nature to its subjects, who were very serious & dangerous people. Several outright mistakes. For example, one of the most famous photos ever taken of outlaws, The Wild Bunch, is stated to have been taken in San Francisco, of all places. It was taken in Ft. Worth Texas. There are more. Waited anxiously for delivery of book, since it was written up in a gun magazine I subscribe to. Maybe they didn't read it.

This is a very interesting compendium of guns used in the American West through Prohibition an a bit beyond. There are plenty of amazing pictures to go along with the text. Our only negative is that the font size used was a bit on the small side. We believe a slightly larger type size should have been used. Otherwise the book is great and had a very expensive "feel". We highly recommend it to anyone interested in a fairly comprehensive review of guns, most of which were used by the bad guys.

I really enjoyed reading this, but I have one complaint. The authors claim that the Reno gang operated out of Kentucky. That is simply not true! They got the county and city correct, but they are in Indiana not Kentucky. I usually don't write reviews, but as a Hoosier I felt compelled to set the record straight.

Disappointed in the research. Most people believe Butch and Sundance died in Bolivia. Nothing about their Mauser carbines or semi auto pistols. Gave the book away.
