Review

"Historians Gerry and Janet Souter take the reader back to a time between 1840 and 1940 when men and women traveled an imaginary twisting outlaw path, the "Owlhoot Trail," where outlaws and man hunters lived bold and died hard. In their new book, Guns of Outlaws - Weapons of the American Bad Man, the pages show actual tools of the trade wielded during a violent century, bound up in a mix of hard truths and mythology. The only solid reality left behind are these trusted relics, aged and showing holster wear with salt-etched pits from sweaty gun powder-stained hands." - Ammoland.com

From the Publisher

Guns of Outlaws: Weapons of the American Bad Man

A collection of Jesse James’s guns from counter-clockwise: the nickel-plated .44-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver was a very popular rival to the Colt; his ubiquitous 1851 Colt Navy percussion; a Remington 1863 New Army percussion; and, at the top, Jesse’s 1873 Colt Peacemaker with ivory grips. Frazier Museum, Louisville, Kentucky

The bank raiders’ corpses were dragged from where they were gunned down by the townspeople

and laid out for the home folks to view their handiwork. Postcards of the boys went for thirty-five cents each. They are: Bill Powers, Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, and Dick Broadwell. Emmett Dalton was riddled, but survived. Dalton Defenders Museum

Hickok might have grown tired of packing those twin Colts everywhere, especially to his round of gambling saloons. To ease his burden, he began carrying a small Smith & Wesson .32-caliber spur trigger revolver in his waistcoat. This gun was enough to reach across a card table. Rock Island Auction Company

Wyatt Earp at age seventy-five in 1923, enjoying his golden years, living off the gritty reputation he built over the decades of moving from town to town across the West, and spinning the yarns everyone wanted to hear.

Thompson and his 1921 Tommy Gun at yet another military trial. While its firepower was awesome, the army brass was not convinced

that such a terror weapon was needed.

Clyde with a Krag rifle and Whippet cropped-down autoloading shotgun.

Testing a bulletproof vest outdoors with a revolver.

This Colt has been modified for fanning the hammer with the palm of the hand by filing off the front of the trigger guard and the trigger. Great speed, much noise, little accuracy.

My wife purchased this work and gave it to me as an early Christmas present. As a long time amateur historian I had studied the lives of early American criminals and law men on more than one occasion. I never felt there was a great deal to add to what I had already learned, but I was wrong.

"Guns of Outlaws" is one of those rare works that gives the reader added insight into the men on both sides of the law during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The Souters in their quest for accuracy allow the reader, perhaps for the first time, a genuinely historically faithful look at the make, caliber, type (knife, rifle, handgun, etc...), and quantity of weapons that were carried, used, then left behind by some of the most notorious and admired characters in American history. In so doing, the authors give us an equally rare look into the personalities, thinking and lives of these historical figures while leading the reader to the inescapable conclusion of the deadliness of their actions and/or their chosen professions.

The authors, Gerry and Janet Souter, also challenge the traditional thinking concerning what weapons were preferred by these early Americans, but more importantly they give us why each was favored. This scholarly work is designed to capture, inform, and challenge the reader; as such it accomplishes that task in a superior fashion using a direct easy to read format including pictures, and diagrams, coupled with detailed explanations of terms used.
