ALPHA VIDEO offers bargain priced, often hard-to-find vintage movies that are ideal for those willing to skip DVD extras. Their transfers show no evidence of restoration, so quality varies from one title to the next, with "fair to good" being the average.

GUNS OF THE REVOLUTION ("Rain for a Dusty Summer") (1971) - Ernest Borgnine, Humberto Almazán

Star of this remake of John Ford's THE FUGITIVE (1947-VHS) is Almazán, a charismaic actor-turned-priest who portrays a Mexican padre during a time in the early 20th Century when churches in his homeland are being destroyed and the clergy murdered. Borgnine is the general who's ordered these purges. Miguel Pro had actually left the seminary because he prefers entertaining, but seeing a bishop shot down at the altar makes him realize that God is in his heart, not the stage.

Father Miguel travels disguised as a peasant, performing on request masses, baptisms and marriages in private homes until he's eventually arrested. Given a chance to live by ceasing all priestly duties, Miguel chooses instead his calling and a death sentence. The beloved priest's firing squad execution brings 30,000 mourners to his funeral.

I gave this movie a 3* Rating ,only because it would fill some time on a dull evening. The great actor Ernest Borgnine plays the major role, starring as the General who is intent on eliminating the wealthy and the Church from Mexico, particularly Priests. The movie was produced in 1971,but Borgnine,s performance is stiff and unconvincing. The next prominent role is of the Priest,.Actually his performance is the best of all in the movie, but that isn't saying much. The story is simple and stretched out. There is a lot of wild action, but more like action being used to make up for a poor storyline. The movie is in color, but with my copy the color is so poor ,it might just as well have been in B & W.There is quite a bit of music, and all one can say about it is that it sounds Mexican. This movie certaintly didn't do much for establishing the career of Borgnine,as any run of the mill actor could have done the role just as well.
