This review is from: The Gunsmith (Apache Raid #197) (Paperback)
April, 1883 San Carlos, Arizona Territory foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains This book concerns an actual event of history concerning General Crook's movement into Mexico and the Sierra Madres tracking the wild ones (Apaches who left the reservation), numbering about 100 warriors with women and children who accompanied Geronimo and Chatto. After attacking and raiding the Apaches crossed the border to hide in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Crook has asked for permission to enter Mexico and pursue these raiding Apaches. After gaining that request, Clint Adams is included in the party that wants to return the warriors to their reservation. In this effort, he is accompanied by General George Crook-commanding, Al Sieber-chief of scouts, Sam Bowman, Mickey Free, and numerous, mostly unnamed, soldiers. Most importantly an Apache warrior named Tsoe or Peaches also accompanied the party. His knowledge of the Apaches and especially Geronimo will prove most helpful. The book is not only filled with historical lore it is very well written. The plot sustains itself not only through excellent writing but by its own historical narrative. Readers of western Indian Wars history may be familiar with the large picture here but the small scenes and conversations are most interesting. Any reader enjoying a fine western tale or especially those of us who follow the Gunsmith series will enjoy this work from the pen of J. R. Roberts. Recommended.
