Book Description

July 31, 2009
Gunta Stolzl (1897-1983) was the only woman to teach at the Bauhaus, the twentieth century's most important school of design, architecture and art. A pioneer in textile design, Stolzl was head of the weaving workshop, and during her tenure there transformed it into a flourishing, productive enterprise. This volume illustrates more than 75 key works by Stolzl, accompanied by excerpts drawn from her journals, letters and articles, some of which are published here for the first time. Accompanied by explanatory comments and a foreword by Monika Stadler, Stolzl's daughter, these personal writings offer an intimate view of the artist's life and work between 1917 and 1931, from her student years in Munich to her service as a Red Cross nurse during the war, and continuing through her years at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau until she founded her own hand-weaving business in Zurich. The chronological organization of the texts, paired with related works, gives rise to many surprising discoveries and provides a vivid portrait of Gunta Stolzl as both an individual and an artist.
Gunta Stolzl (1897-1983) studied at the Kunstgewerbe-schule in Munich from 1914 to 1916, then at the Bauhaus Weimar from 1919 to 1925. She was the director of the weaving workshop at the Bauhaus Dessau from 1925 to 1931. After resigning from the Bauhaus, she ran her own weaving workshop in Zurich, until her death in 1983.
Published in association with Hatje Cantz.

5.0 out of 5 stars UNEXPECTED BAUHAUS INSIGHTS December 17, 2009

For those wanting a very large book containing 160 colour illustrations of Gunta Stolzl's work there is a 260 page Hatje Catz publication which was the catalogue for three 1998 exhibitions in Germany. Her 96-year life is also told in great detail with many photos. The big drawback being the text throughout is in German.

When buying this little book, printed for MOMA by the same publisher I was expecting a condensed version of this earlier effort. Instead, a very pleasant surprise. This is a completely different project - a translated edition of a new tribute to her remarkable career.

But not told in the usual way with essays by art historians. Far more illuminating - almost every written word has been extracted from her letters. Beautifully written letters which give the present generation a "you were there" experience as to what it felt like to be a nurse in WW1, one of the first Bauhaus students, the only woman Bauhaus Master, resigning from the Bauhaus and her eventual move to Switzerland to set up her own weaving company. Plus plenty of colour reproductions of her artwork and most famous artifacts from the Bauhaus looms.

To really enjoy these letters one has to be already fully informed about the Bauhaus saga. Her letters confirm the hypnotic effect Johannes Itten had on the original 1919 Weimar student draft. And how all concerned were aware they and Walter Gropius were making history. To reveal more would spoil a very touching story. One with many ups and downs but ultimately explaining exactly how and why Gunta Stolzl became a seminal female pioneer in the most influential long-lasting artistic movement of the 20th Century.

Although this book is primarily about Gunta Stolzl, it is an excellent review of the entire Bauhaus movement. The many illustrations are stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gunta Stolzl - Bauhaus Genius! July 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having studied art history in the past I was surprised and delighted to discover this Bauhaus artist recently. The fact that she has been less well known than the male artists of the Bauhaus school is a clear demonstration of gender discrimination. The only explanation for this brilliant artists' omission from undergraduate art historical studies is that she worked with textiles, traditionally not regarded as 'high art', and her gender reinforced this prejudice. It is time that Gunta Stolzl took her place alongside the great artists of the 20th century.
This book is lavishly illustrated with high quality reproductions. Easy to handle and a delight to read.
