Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Daryl Guppy has been one of Australia's foremost experts on share trading and charting for almost 20 years. His first book, Share Trading, is still a must-read for people wanting to learn about the market and is widely accepted as the best-selling trading book ever in Australia.

Guppy Trading contains detailed analysis of many topics, including:

  • making effective trades based on news events and informed trading

  • advanced application of the Guppy Multiple Moving Average to assess the true strength of a trend

  • how to establish and improve trade entry, exit and stop loss points in volatile markets

  • effective trading of international markets

  • safely integrating derivatives to boost portfolio returns.

Guppy Trading contains 23 of the most enduring and important chapters from Guppy's earlier books, completely revised, and combines them with 10 entirely new chapters. These new chapters detail new trading methods and instruments that have been developed to create new opportunities and ensure survival in interconnected modern markets. This comprehensive compendium is critical reading for traders looking to maximise their returns.

What a thrill to find that a technical analyst of the calibre of Daryl Guppy is providing a compilation of his best work in one volume. Guppy Trading will fill a void in one's trading library by offering advice, techniques, solutions to trading issues and, most importantly, a quarter century of experience – all in one book. If you have any interest at all in technical analysis methods and techniques, then you should read this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
--Greg Morris, author of The Complete Guide to Market Breadth Indicators and Candlestick Charting Explained, and Chief Technical Analyst, Stadion Money Management

Daryl Guppy takes his audience for a grand tour of the universe in which today's traders operate. Guppy first deals with individual trading psychology before jumping into the analysis of his trading methodology and the general/specialized trading techniques on which his methodology rests.

Trading psychology is of paramount importance, especially when a trade does not turn out as expected. Guppy reminds traders that they should never underestimate their own capacity for self-sabotage, notwithstanding all the preparation they put originally in a trade.

Guppy demonstrates convincingly through the technical analysis of his trading methodology that the market is founded on fundamentals, but price behavior and trending behavior are primarily influenced by the emotions and behavior of market participants. Whoever has any doubts about this reality of contemporary trading is invited to go straight to chapter 32 in which Guppy examines the (diverging) stock performance of Chinese companies that are parallel listed and traded both in mainland China and outside of China.

Guppy concludes from his tour d'horizon of modern trading that success rests on four pillars:

1. Constant planning for failure regardless of the success that one currently enjoys;
2. Capacity and willingness to ruthlessly change one's mind to avoid getting stuck with a losing position;
3. Recognition of operating in an environment that one does not control;
4. Preparation is everything.

As a side note, Guppy could develop a Q&A section after a few chapters so that readers can test their understanding of the material at hand. Alexander Elder uses judiciously this didactic methodology in his newest book "The New Sell & Sell Short."
