these short piano pieces are simple, but absolutely not boring. gurdjieff and de hartmann wrote some of the most thoughtful and sincere music you'll ever hear. I found this CD over a year ago and it's one I return to over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cacaphonic Harmonious, July 14, 2001

This review is from: Gurdjieff's Music for the Movements (Audio CD)
Truly an exposition of beautiful "objective" listening. This music will not put you to sleep. Transitions are abrupt and engaging throughout the score's entirity. I play the music whenever I find myself searching for something to do or am bored. This music will consume all negativity and poke the listner to begin a stirring sensation in their own mentation. The music is not sophisticated or eligant by no means, but has a way about it which will intrige one to listen again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Purchasing, February 29, 2008
This review is from: Gurdjieff's Music for the Movements (Audio CD)
For people who have never practiced the movements and want to learn more about Gurdjieff, this is a great place to start. The movements music is designed to work on all three centers (intellectual, emotional, physical), when it is used in conjunction with the dances. Alone, it is beautiful and conducive to contemplation. For people who have practiced the movements, it brings evokes many associations. Van Dulleman is a fine pianist, and has done the world a service by making this music more available to the general public. De Hartmann's original recordings are also very highly recommended.

This review is from: Gurdjieff's Music for the Movements (Audio CD)
This two disc album of music for the Gurdjieff Movements is excellently and sensitively played by pianist Wim Van Dullemen. The accompanying booklet gives both a well written history of the music and photographs of the Movements performances spanning 70 years of study and performance.

The music will mainly be of interest to students of "The Work",the body of spiritual and psychological teachings originally brought to the West by G.I. Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky. G.I. Gurdjieff described himself as a teacher of dancing, and brought an Asian tradition of sacred dance to Western students, for whom dance as an inner discipline as well as a physical and artistic expression was a very new concept in the 1920s.

However, as Anthony Blake says in the introduction, "...the design of the music is not conceptual, but crafted in the substance of feeling. For this reason, you can listen to this music even if you have never seen or performed any of the Movements. The language is strangely universal. It really is a language of "inner movement".It gives the sense of the soul in movement.

This music is truly a gift for listening and I'm certain will enhance anyone's meditative practice.

if you are a fan of the pure Gurdjieff music, this is a wonderful compilation. It is not recorded in a way to allow you to turn the volume up much which distressed me a bit,but the music is the most typical
. music of the genre Gurdjieff brought to our attentions in the west.
