From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-- Jesse, a preschooler, visits the seashore with her family and experiences the rushing tide of the ocean gurgling around her toes. At first she's afraid of the overwhelming presence of the water, but quickly she befriends the ocean. After she returns home, she receives a package. When she opens it, out flows the entire ocean. She promptly tells the ocean that it cannot live in her bedroom, so she opens the door and it flows into the basement, down the street, etc. Finally, Jesse orders the ocean back to the beach, via the box in her bedroom, after which she promises to visit it soon. Although the theme has possibilities, this title loses and loses big. The text is choppy and lacks fluidity and rhythm. The muted pastel illustrations do reflect the text, but in no way do they symbolically move from the events of reality to fantasy. There are so many other wonderful picture books about a child's experience at the beach that this one is well worth passing up. --Leslie Barban, Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC
