Editorial Reviews

Review

“I like these dirty poems.” —Eileen Myles

Review

“‘It is not a movement, or a camp or a clique.’ So writes Arielle Greenberg in her introduction to the phenomenon now to be known as ‘the Gurlesque.’ So what is it? Think theory in fishnets, think beyond camp, think cute with claws, Plath with humor, passivity without pathos, think pink with a gun. Gurlesque is a sensibility and a style, a walking panic attack, a threat and a promise. Don't just read this book, ingest it, become it, perform it!” (Judith Jack Halberstam)

“Here comes a juicy volley of some of the most obstreperous, ill-behaved, ill-advised, detrimental, dismantling, dismaying poems out there – and I do mean ‘out there.’ The double introduction signals right away that the Gurlesque is nothing as centralized or self-confirming as a ‘movement,’ but Glenum and Greenberg make a potent case for the persistence of resistance in all its distributed, multitudinous, mutant and deviating femme and/or female forms.” (Joyelle McSweeeney)

More About the Author

Lara Glenum is an American poet and multimedia artist. She is the author of four books of poetry: The Hounds of No, Maximum Gaga, Pop Corpse, and All Hopped Up On Fleshy Dumdums. She is also the co-editor of Gurlesque: the new grrly, grotesque, burlesque poetics, an anthology of contemporary women's poetry and visual art, which Ms. magazine heralds as "a daring, juicy read that bodes well for a new popular feminist poetics."

The Huffington Post recently named Maximum Gaga as "one of the superlative books of poetry of the last ten years." Writing about Pop Corpse, critic David B. Applegate calls Glenum's work "a splattered fairy tale for today, a new flavor of poetic candy, and, ultimately, a pleasure to read."

The recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, she has also been an NEA Translation Fellowship partner. She is currently an Associate Professor of English at LSU, where she is one of the directors of Delta Mouth, a national literary festival.

Just because you mock it doesn't mean you don't respect it. "Gurlesque: The New Grrls, grotesque, burlesque poetics" Is a collection of poems, short plays and stories as eighteen female writers come together under one cover and provide a humorous, insightful book that is by no means lady like but is none the less valuable and insightful. "Gurlesque" is a solid and very highly recommended read for any poetry reader or women's studies reader.

The combination of Greenberg's introduction/discussion of the Gurlesque and the collection of works from contemporary writers is highly stimulating. Nice range of creative work as well.

Following the legacy of the riot grrl movement this punky, grunge-and-glitter collection crackles with energy! Don't pass it up if you want a real jolt!
