4.0 out of 5 stars Firm licorice with real flavor
This is Dutch type licorice, made with licorice root and not anise. It is the firm type licorice, very stiff, and in the traditional cat shape. It has a vague saltiness, not very pronounced.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dutch Licorice Cats
The Licorice flavor is great. I thought they were too hard to chew right out of the bag. I had to put some in my pocket to soften them up a bit before eating.

I have been looking for this type of licorice near and far. It is very reminiscent of a licorice that I ate as a child that was circular and dome shaped. I really like it. It is noit too salty for me as some are. Highly recommended by me!

They have a good flavor and you get a good number of them. If considering them you should know they are on the harder side. Not harder like they will crack your teeth, but harder like it takes a minute or two to chew each one. Stiff might be a more appropriate description

Licorice Cats = YUM Nice & hard. Rich flavor, not too sweet. My only complaint? They are gone too soon.

I am a licorice lover, and have been looking for a change from the run-of-the-mill locorices that one can find in stores. I've tasted licorice cats at a specialty store before and I was hoping it was the same--and it is! I am very pleased with the order--and the price--comes out to a little over one dollar for a 5.2oz bag (12 of them in an order). The candy is just soft enough to be chewy but not too soft to be mushy and sticky. It is just sweet enough to be delicoous witohut the sweetness taking over, and the licorice flavor is amazing. I've shared some packages with like-loving friends, and they are all raving about it and now want to order their own batch! Highly recommended.

They almost to the stale side. Not recommended. Should have read the review before purchase. Thinking might return. Glad my sister didn't wait till Christmas to open.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good! But different than American., November 8, 2011

They were indeed hard, perhaps slightly stale?

(compared to american licorice)

But I don't know, having never been to the Netherlands, what they are supposed to be like.

They do soften up after a bit, and do taste great, very natural.

They are a hit with my friends who have tried them.

and are GLUTEN FREE! Hooray.

I wish for a smaller package order size ;-)

Living in Panama, I found there is no licorice except a few stores in Panama City. We live about 6 hours West of PC, in the mountains, and there is no licorice here. In fact, there are very few sweets here.

I have chosen to import 10 pounds per month to sustain my need for a delectable treat.

Gustaf's Dutch Licorice Cats are the perfect treat! I share them with my friends, who have never tasted licorice, yet they know anise very well as it is a popular spice. I have only found a few locals who are not thrilled to receive a licorice treat when they visit.

I don't know if I got a bad or old batch, but these things were so hard that you can actually hear a crunch sound as you bite into them. That's not my ideal candy style.
