The music of Gustav Mahler encompasses a breadth of feeling rarely even approached by any other composer; demanding the efforts of a virtuoso orchestra, each of his symphonies imposes immense challenges for every section of the orchestra. This particular symphony is the only one I have had the pleasure of performing, and is one of my favorite works of any composer. The London Symphony Orchestra, as always, creates here a powerful rendition of this piece in all its colors and textures. While at times Farberman's interpretation lacks the excitement and energy that characterizes many sections of the piece, the orchestra imbues the piece with great depth and expression. I recommend this recording.
