Crass for the 90's,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gut Wringing Machine (Audio CD)
This band will go down in punk rock history with the likes of Crass and The Dead Kennedy's. Their lyrics are a mobilizing force for the anti-corporate globalization movement. This last and final Naked Aggression release is the most powerful, genuine voice for the disenfranchised youth of today and tomorrow. Their message of urgency and hope as well as the brilliant yet unassuming compositions will stand the test of time. This album is a must have.

right on the mark,

this cd does nearly everything right. it seems the melody that was found in earlier naked aggression songs is in full force here, & the driving, fast, angry, anthemic shouting is still there as well. what we have here is a perfect blend of the two, combining anthemic, sing along songs with raw angst, a strong social awareness in their lyrics, and amazing melodies to back it all up. i love the song structures on this album. naked aggression put out a pinnacle of a record with this one. amazing stuff.

These folks are the real deal. This is what punk rock is truly all about, boys and girls. They have all the right ingredients, including social defiance and rebellion, hard-hitting lyrics backed by fast and loud guitars, and that special anthemic quality that is so often poorly imitated. They also have the gritty feel of some of my favorite old punk bands (one reviewer mentioned the Dead Kennedy's, and although the music is pretty different in many respects, I can definitely see the intangible similarity between the two). In many ways, Naked Aggression are like retro revival 80's punk, but it's unfair to classify them in that way other than to give you a rough idea of the music they play and the attitude they project... in reality, they define their own style. The primary vocalist is female, which is somewhat atypical of really good punk bands although it has happened before. There are also occasional dueling male lyrics on some songs, and the vocals are all more than adequate. I can't say these people are outstanding singers, but they are good enough to get the job done right and they don't fail to inspire with their attitude. This album is Naked Aggression's favorite, and since they have broken up ne'er to play music again (due to a asthma-related death in the band), they self-proclaim this album to be the one they will be "remembered for." |
