This book is chocked full of awesome photos of the type of players that made the NFL so great. Long gone are these type of men; men that would put it all on the line, not for a salary but because they just enjoyed playing the game. My, how times have changed. If you like old school football and dont like the direction the league is going now, relive the Glory Days with this fine publication.

This is football at it's best! If you're a fan of football in the 50's and 60's, you'll love this treasure. As a lifelong Sports Illustrated reader, the photos are top notch. A must read.

This book is essentially a companion piece to the same photographer's 2008 publication "Ballet in the Dirt:" It's in a weighty coffee table format, it covers a very similar period, it contains a minimal amount of accompanying text, and it mostly spotlights Leifer's remarkable camera work. All of these are good things: "Ballet" was a fabulous collection of baseball images, and this is a fabulous collection of football images. As with "Ballet," the brief narratives don't add a lot; if you're a big enough fan of football to be buying a book like this, you probably know most of what it will tell you. Nonetheless, that's not really the point. The point is the pictures, and Leifer was one of the great sports photographers of all time. All of the iconic players of the era are here. I particularly enjoyed seeing alternate perspectives on famous plays and moments that we've all already seen a million times (including the deciding play of the 1967 Ice Bowl in Green Bay).

If you've got a true football history nut on your shopping list, this is a can't-miss.

In his 2006 induction speech into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, John Madden spoke of honoring the history and tradition of pro football. This book does that in spades, and as such, is very "Madden-esque." Plus, given that so many of the pictures are from the league's beautiful era when the grass was real, there's a lot of mud here. Madden would love that.

The pictures are great, and in a large-format book, they really come to life. Even though many of Neil Liefer's photos are football icons already, few have ever been printed so large, and this breathes even more new life into them. Even the black and white ones are colorful.

Just three small things are worth noting in passing as minor irritants.

First, for no reason that I can figure, the first 40 or 50 pages (at least of the edition I have) are printed in English and then French and German, while accompanied by different pictures, with English captions. Makes no sense to me. This isn't some $7 cheaply-made electronics product with directions in six languages; it's a highly-priced book about a sport that really seems to attract most of its interest in the English-speaking world.

Second, there are a tiny number of factual errors that another editing eye could have caught. For example, the 1970 NFC championship game between Dallas and San Francisco was at Kezar Stadium, not Candlestick Park. Seems trivial, but a book celebrating that era of football should have its text measure up to its images. The images are perfect. The text is very good, but less than perfect.

The photos in this book are simply iconic football photographs. The game isn't quite played that way anymore but it may give younger people a new appreciation for the history of NFL football. If you like football and photography this book should be on your coffee table.
