Maybe one of the worst,
By Don Tompkins (Lansing, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
There are so many other books about diet and exercise that are better than this one. It makes one wonder how it ever got published in the first place...maybe the catch title, I don't know. I liked what one reviewer said...if you're a gym bunny, you can pretty much eat anything you want and stay slim. Eating healthy is all about being simple...just look at any of the popular diet/exercise books. Broiling or boiling is all pretty simple, and unless you choose to make a complicated dish, most food that you cook in your house is certainly easy enough to do. The last reviewer talks about making the book a gift...actually several have. Diets and exercise are personal goals, not goals that are ascribed to someone through a gift. I think there is an infinite array of books out there that better suit a nutrition program than this dog of a book. Lastly, I would have to say that there was not enough variety in the food part to sustain a program over an extended period.

This book is a must-read,

I just stumbled upon this book and have found it to be incredibly full of useful and tactical information on how to eat smart. As a frequent reader of such books, this book stands out in that it provides an easy-to-read tone by the author who seems to be a "regular guy" in that he has walked the path he describes. This interesting read provides step-by-step information on what guys should stock in their kitchens, how to cook an easy healthy meal in your kitchen (and can be done faster than dialing for delivery food!). Believe me, I am the king of eating out as I am a single guy on-the-run most of the time...I have tried some of the recipes and it's much cheaper and faster to cook a meal at home. Bottom line, this book was inspiring and I strongly recommend it! I plan to carry this book around with me in my backpack and/or briefcase as it is simply a good resource. READ IT!!!

A Guy Can Getta Better Opinion,
By Brian Mulroney (Casper, WY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
In the opening for Part One, the author asks the question, "Have you ever wondered why there are so many different theories on weigh control and weight managment? It's because no one knows for sure". You can stop reading there. Neither does this author who claims to be a self taught nutritionist. He takes that "no one knows for sure" and trumps his own plan as the new gold standard. We need John Stossel to run another GIVE ME A BREAK! program on this book! Since "no one knows for sure" how the earth was created, maybe I'll take my high school science knowledge and write my own book. I read the book, but don't believe there was ONE single new fact that hasn't been droned on about over and over again. Not one. You really can't use the book as a weight management plan for a diet because there's just really not enough in there. But for laughs, please go look at the index. Was this drawn out to make the book thicker? Every word is basically referenced with all the pages where it appeared. I think I get more VALID information in the occasional magazine article about diet and nutrition...and plus, you get a VARIETY of varying ideas. If you want a total program, stick with something like South Beach which you can actually FOLLOW. I want my money back.

If we lost any weight at all it was because of the laughter,
By Clovis Murphy (Paducah, KY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
So four of us bought this at the office and we were all going to try it together. Like I said, if we lost any weight at all it was because this farce was trying to take itself seriously. I admit that I do most of my eating out, but I do know how to cook and even as a dilettante in the kitchen, I know that you have to be generally precise with some of the ingredients unless you're going to ruin the dish. Is it that hard to follow a recipe for what you like? Not if you're going to cook anyway. I feel like reading some of these reviews that I've been to a self-help forum where everyone walked out with the power except me. Then I noticed that most of the positive reviews were from Chicago, and I figured my group had just been tricked by the author's friends.

Not one single thing you haven't heard 1000 times,
By Darnell Rigby (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
That was my biggest disappointment. Nothing was new...and the recipes, although touted as easy could be a litle cumbersome, and the recipes couldn't consitute an overall program. So I was left trying to figure out what the book was trying to do, or was it trying to do too many things. Was it trying to be a synopsis of a bunch of Ladies'Home Journal articles on losing weight? And although the author states that good eating = no dieting, nutrition is not really that simplistic. Even in his own case, although he alleges he is a triathlete, he doesn't even figure in that that type of extreme competition might have a little to do with staying in shape...it was just all eating right = no dieting. A wrong message to be sending too many people. Shame.

An easy, practical guide,
By Brian Justice (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
I know first-hand the validity of the author's premise. I AM the friend mentioned on page 27 of the introduction. I ate lunch with Russ a few years ago, complaining about the difficulty of losing 10 pounds, all the while eating a plate of french fries. Russ' advice after that - and further explained in the book - turned out to be sound, practical and easy to understand and utilize! It is a great book for any guy who doesn't want to "diet," but just wants eat healthily and , just as importantly, realistically!

Just What You Want the Way You Want It,

This book is written exactly the way I like my instructional/informational books written... Easy to Read, Easy to 'Digest', and Easy to Use. When it comes to these types of 'lifestyle' books, I usually fall asleep or get confused by the 2nd chapter. "A Guy's Gotta Eat" is just the opposite... I was able to breeze through the information because it is written in a friendly/informal style that I can relate to, and is well organized so trying out some of the ideas was easy to do. I have been recommending this book to all my friends who want to be more fit, but have a hard time focusing on the process. Good stuff!

Fast food that's also good for you,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from a friend and liked it so much I just bought one myself. The book is a little bit of everything -- very practical advice about how to eat healthy without spendin a lot of time and money to do it. There's also great advice on how to best set up your kitchen and even order groceries. The author's idea is to basically shop for groceries once a month. Works for me!Lots of great recipes in here that are very tasty and easy to make. I also appreciated the effort the author made to back up so many of his statments with research. Very practical thinking in here -- yet fully backed by solid science. "Diets" don't usually work long-term because they're inherently restrictive, but from reading this book, you get the sense that Mr. Klettke loves to eat and more specifically, loves to eat good food. Lots of detail in here about how to incorporate strong spices and seasonings into your food and I learned a lot about how the pleasure of eating is often found in enjoying different tastes and textures at once. For someone who is getting a little older, likes to stay active, wants to eat better, but doesn't want to jump on that Atkins bandwagon, you should definitely consider this book.

A Gay's Gotta Get Better Advice,
By Parton Parcel (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Guy's Gotta Eat: The Regular Guy's Guide to Eating Smart (Paperback)
I read the review in the Chicago Free Press and got the book...I can see where one reviewer said that the positive press has probably been the result of the author's own public relations company. But there was not one shred of information in this book that we all haven't read a thousand times, unless someone just doesn't read at all! Nothing new. Other than maybe that you can be a little sloppier with what you're cooking. But a spoonful versus a teaspoon is really that different for someone to figure out? I think the author is trying to take the community to the collective cleaners.
