5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, you *can* cut calories and fat and still eat *great* !
Buy this book and treat yourself to meals that are so good you won't even notice that they're good *for* you, as well! Especially try Don's magic on his Never Better Roast Pork Loin. It's absolutely fantastic. Cruise over to the Casserole section and try his exceptional Macaroni and Cheese...this book will keep you busy! Don's pleasant, conversational style makes it...

well, yeah, but cardboard is good, too, if you cover it with enough gravy. The only things worse than the recipes are the unctuous, syruppy commentaries. Eat sensibly, exercise, and avoid cook books which you might get more value from eating than from reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to cut fat but love to eat, buy this book!, July 9, 1999

At long last, a realistic low fat cookbook. Hurray for Don Mauer! I have tried several of the recipes in this book and each one has been wonderful. The lasagna is fabulous, and my family loved the caesar salad. Some of the ingredients may seem unusual, but trust the author and go with it. You won't be disappointed. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the generous portion sizes too. This book is a winner.

I have been using low-fat cookbooks for about 10 years and this is the best low-fat cookbook I have ever owned (this is impressive, due to the fact that I probable own 50 low-fat cookbooks). Every recipe I have tried so far is wonderful. The servings are big enough for both my husband and me. This is not just a man's cookbook, it is a cookbook for anyone who likes to eat and cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, February 5, 2002

This book, along with Don Mauer's prior cookbook, Lean and Lovin It, helped me lose over 70 pounds. A lot of low fat cookbooks really aren't written by people who like to eat or cook, and it shows. This one is written by someone who enjoys both. These recipes make eating low fat food not just palatable, but a way of life. One note -- a few of the recipes in this book appear to be improvements from the earlier cookbook -- the hummus and cocolate sauce recipes come to mind -- but I'm actually happy to try the variations.

Mauer's recipes are excellent. Of the couple dozen cookbooks I have on the kitchen shelf, I use his the most. The recipes come out great. In fact, the most popular meal I ever made for book club came entirely from this book. People raved about it and never knew it was low fat.

You don't have to be a guy to appreciate this book stuffed full of date-worthy dishes. I use this cookbook more than any on my shelf, and noone can ever believe these recipes are low-fat. From Chinese food to Carolina-style turkey BBQ, everything I've tried so far in this book is a real winner. Thank you, Don Mauer, for showing us healthy food that can be every bit as rich and tasty as the "bad" stuff.

This cookbook sooo isn't just for guys!!! Hopefully his next one will be A Gal's Guide to Great Desserts...Hey Don, are you out there?

This is another great book by one of the best. I have this one and his other "Lean and Loving It". They're wonderful and I highly recommend owning both of them. Try the Succulent Roast Chicken, IT IS AWESOME!!! (It's in the oven as I type)

Also good are his Chili's, there's a couple of them and I've even mixed it up and merged the two sometimes, depending on what I have on hand. With his lowfat, low salt tricks, I now have the confidence to experiment with my own recipes and so far, they have all been great. The desserts are really good too. This book is filled with the comfort food we all love, it's just a healthy version that tastes totally yummy and your guests will never know they're eating lowfat and low sodium meals. Enjoy!!!
