Book Description

June 22, 2010

A Guy's Guide to Life: How to Become a Man in 224 Pages or Less is a teenage guy’s handbook to becoming a man with a healthy mind, body, and soul.

What does society want of teen guys? To be independent, tough, and macho? To be a sensitive, caring metrosexual? To excel in school and sports and business? The challenges are many, and we haven't even mentioned the most important-and most frightening-topic of conversation: girls. The road to manhood is a perilous one.

Guys need a guidebook, one that asks and answers the questions they're reluctant to discuss. They need a book that addresses the myths of manhood with a straightforward approach teenage guys will appreciate and absorb. Author Jason Boyett understands what many fail to realize—that somewhere between the awkwardness and braggadocio, the goofiness and the developing body, there is a real person struggling to make his mark on the world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Guys: use the Bible as your guide to life October 27, 2010
Format:Paperback
I received A Guy's Guide to Life, by Jason Boyett, from Book Sneeze at no cost to me by simply agreeing to provide a review of the book. As much as I appreciate their generosity, I'm not a fan of the book. But before I get into that, I'll first take a look at a few points that I thought were helpful.

I appreciate that the author wrote such a book. There's a lot of confusion for boys as they transition to become men. There are so many pressures enforced upon them, so many circumstances changing, and so many hormones raging that teenagers can get overwhelmed with the decisions and possibilities for their lives. In this book, the author attempts to give advice to guys on the major issues, and to do so from a biblical framework. I appreciate that.

I also appreciate some of the very practical advice that the author gave. For example, when talking about the importance of good communication with your parents, Boyett wrote, "Honesty builds trust. If Mom or Dad knows you're shooting straight - that you're opening up to them about personal stuff - then they're more likely to trust you." That's just plain good advice. The book is full of little things like that. I appreciate that.

However, I have some serious concerns about this book as well. First of all, in the attempt to overview many issues briefly, Boyett ends up covering almost no issues adequately. This really should have been broken up into at least three books: one for each of the three sections of the book (mind, body, and soul). But this isn't the main issue I have with the book.

In his attempt to be relevant to and make a connection with his reader, the author assumes too much, and gives too little. He writes as if the primary motivations of the reader are finding out what's cool, and finding out how men act. But any teenager who would pick up this book probably already has his own ideas about these things. Instead of "how to become a man in 224 pages or less," the author should have sought to write a book that could have the subtitle, "how to become a godly man in an ungodly world." Now that would have been worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Guy's Guide to Life - very interesting January 5, 2011

A Guy's Guide to Life: How to Become a Man in 224 Pages or Less

A Guy's Guide to Life -- How to become a man in 224 pages or less by Jason Boyett was provided to me by BookSneeze in exchange for my review of it. I have watched lots of guys go through the process of growing up, and they often experienced a lot of frustration, and feelings of rebellion. I've long felt that our culture did a poor job of preparing boys for the turbulence of the teenage years and all the changes that they will face as they become men.

While this book is not a cure-all, it is a must read for any male teenager you know. It has a lot of useful information and tips to help them navigate these rough years while speaking to them in an offbeat way that they can relate to without feeling talked down to. This book would be a great gift to a young man about to enter puberty, already in the throws of adolescence, or about to become a full-fledged man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Each young man needs this book... September 22, 2010
Format:Paperback
What is a 34-year-old father of four girls doing reading a book titled, A Guy's Guide to Life? I know, it doesn't make a ton of sense, but I'm truly glad I was able to peruse the pages. Author, Jason Boyett writes very practically about many different topics including abuse, blended families, drugs, but also how to tie a tie and how to shave. He weaves the simple, mundane, everyday tasks with the profoundly spiritual fatherly advice that any young man reading this book would garner experience from.

I really enjoyed the chapter regarding how to be a gentleman in 2010. After reading this book, chivalry can not be dead. There were a number of things that I pulled from the pages that I need to reintroduce in my own marriage.

This is a tremendous tool for every young man to have on his bookshelf and better yet, in his heart. Parents, you must get this book for your son as a rite of passage into manhood. It covers everything that you are afraid to talk to your son about, but that he needs to know. Please do him a favor and get him this book. If you do, it will at least put a few hairs on his chest. One or two.
