Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"No Jane Austen flicks here, pal," the cover advertises. At last, here's a movie guide that appeals to men's basic instincts. The films are rated, not according to their cinematographic genius, but by their achievements in five categories: "violence," "profanity," "babes," "cool cars," and "hero worship." Chapters include "Nothing but Action," "Clint's Best Westerns," "Brothers in Arms," and "The Best of Bondage." For each film he describes, author Scott Meyer summarizes the plot, discusses the cast, tells why guys love it, and points out highlights and memorable lines. Best--and funniest--of all, he gives hints about how a guy might convince a female friend to rent one of these movies: "Honey, you'll like Alien because Sigourney Weaver rescues her cat; GoodFellas is terrific because all the boys love their mothers; and you owe me a gander at Full Metal Jacket because I had to sit through Beaches last week." Meyer also gives awards to the best in guys' movies and warns you about flicks--Bull Durham and Top Gun, for example--that are packaged as guy pics but are not the real item. This book is full of good humor and is fun to read and browse, but it helps if you think Barb Wire is a greater film classic than La Grande Illusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars any guide that wallops TOP GUN is all-right by me!, May 5, 1998

This review is from: The Guys' Guide to Guys' Videos (Paperback)
Here goes, fellas! Scott Meyer's guide to he-man movies caught my attention from its very first entry! In the section called "Da Classics", the movie "Bad Day at Black Rock" was listed--it's my favorite Spencer Tracy movie; when Tracy stops short of turning the other cheek in front of bully Ernest Borgnine, and judo- chops him into unconsciousness, you would be hard-pressed not to enjoy the movie ... This guide rates movies by a testosterone-type scale: Violence, profanity, babes, cool cars, and hero worship. Whether you guys prefer westerns, chop-socky films, ballsy comedies, horror flix, or damb near anything else, this is the book to buy for non-fans of "chick flicks". No Steel Magnolia flicks here, pal!

3.0 out of 5 stars MEN! Take this book to the video store., October 2, 1997

This review is from: The Guys' Guide to Guys' Videos (Paperback)
This book is written for men who want action flicks with lots of babes (preferably unclothed) and lots of violence (blood, gore, car chases and crashes). Scott Meyer rates over 225 movies by how much violence, how many beautiful babes, cool cars, profanity, and hero worship. Clint Eastwood is one of author's favorites. The chapter "Clint's Best Westerns" reminds us that the reason guys watch is "Anyone who has ever crossed Clint--and that's just about everyone--gets paid back." Don't forget Dirty Harry--movies covered are Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool. "Memorable Lines," a sub-heading in each chapter, brings back some of the great lines from Dirty Harry flicks. Remember "...you have to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do you, punk?" or "...Go ahead. Make my day." "The Best Of Bondage" chapter reviews most of the James Bond movies which all rate high in the above mentioned categories except profanity. One of the best sub-headings for each movie is "Honey, you'll like this movie." This is how a guy can convince his date to watch the movie with him. For the James Bond movies, the guy just needs to tell his woman "...everyone always goes formal, no matter what the occasion or hour of the day." The chapter, "Posers: Almost, but Not Quite" lists movies that are described as real guys' movies, but they are not. You might be surprised at this list. There are also awards for winners in categories on "Guns and Gore," "Vehicular Sensations," and "Skin Deep." Grab the remote and push PLAY.
