Not Whitfield's Best Work,
By La Di Da (Oakland, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
I wanted to like this book because I loved his last one, but I just couldn't get into it. It was often hard to distinguish which of the two characters were narrarating because their voices at times could be very similar. It also didn't help they had similar names. Whitfield also has a tendency to drag out descriptions leaving me to think, "Enough already, I get it!" He tries to be too literal. My advice is to get a copy of 'Something's Wrong With Your Scale'.

mediocre,
By Kelly (Swedesboro, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guys in Suits (Paperback)
The book was readable, that's about it. The ending was cute but the point of the story did not seem strong enough to me to base a book around it. The two main characters in the book are extremely immature. Example when Stuart (the suave guy) has to follow a list of things to say to a girl on a date. What type of suave guy can't even hold a conversation without a list to accompany them. They don't know how to act around woman and I hate reading books where the main characters are weak. Most of the stunts pulled in the book are very unbelievable and I didn't find the book very funny. But im guessing if you have read his past books and enjoyed them, you will also like this one.

LADIES OF COLOR TURNING PAGES (BOOK CLUB),
By
This review is from: Guys in Suits (Paperback)
This book won an "Oscar" for Most Entertaining for 2002 from our book club-LADIES OF COLOR TURNING PAGES. We found the book to be light hearted, humorous and entertaing. We laughed aloud at many of the situations the two main characters-Simon and Stuart encountered. We noted that the author was honest and on target in his observations about men and how they deal with their emotions in relation to women and life.

Third Strike Whitfield...you're out!,
By
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is the third book I have attempted to read by Mr. Whitfield and the third I could not finish. The book, "Guys in Suits", has captured a great and somewhat unique idea for a storyline but Mr. Whitfield was not able to pull it together. It opened with the plot of two eligible bachelors looking for companions to accompany them on their yearly excursion. As the book progressed I became less and less interested in whether Simon and Stuart found dates for this yearly excursion and realized the book had turned into a novel filled with misadventures, mishaps and mistakes. In a couple of the chapters, I found myself becoming increasingly confused about who (Stuart, Simon, or any other added character) was talking and a couple of the jokes were just...for lack of a better word-stupid. For example, what was this "geezer" verses "sneezer" routine? On a more positive note, Mr. Whitfield does appear to have a slight sense of humor and on occasion there were some really funny lines. For people who are fans of Mr. Whitfield and have enjoyed his first two books, I am sure this one will be a winner but he is definitely out of my reading game.

Just Plain Stupid!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book had an OK storyline, but the two main characters are silly, immature & just plain stupid. The book was poorly written as it was difficult to distinguish which character was talking during certain parts in the chapters. If these are the type of men that are available in the dating scene, then women have a very small selection of eligible bachelors. This book did not entertain or amuse me - I only wanted the book to end as it was a waste of my time.

Not As Good As I Expected!,
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed Something's Wrong With Your Scale(SWWYS) so when I heard that Van Whitfield was coming out with a new release I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed. The first 100 pages were really good as I read about two friends who were unknowingly involved with the same woman. It was entertaining and hilarious to read about what they were willing to do to get this woman to go on the "Annual Vacation" with them. And yet still neither of them nor the female knew that they were talking about the same person or that two friends were dating the same woman. Unfortunately, the more I read the story became sort of redundant and not very exciting. But I stuck with the book because I wanted to see if it would get better toward the ending. No such luck. Maybe my expectations were too high. I was looking for the same style that made SWWYS such a funny and witty read but Guys In Suits didn't quite do that for me. Nevertheless, I'm not mad at Mr. Whitfield and I still look forward to other reads from this author. I just hope that the next read is better than this one.

Van Does It Again!! Funny - Insightful & Real!!,
By Walter Smith (New York City, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
Who is the clown that read this and didn't like it? This is a funny, laugh out loud book, just like his first two. It's good to read about ordinary guys who tell it like it is. What I like about Van's work, is that it represents the mindset of me and regular guys like me. There are no supermen pretending to have all the answers or men who are God's gift to women. Whitfield's work has grown with each book and in this case, grows by the page. I asked a few friends about the 60 Day Rules for Men from the book and they all agreed - It's REAL, men tank after just 60 days in a relationship. The storyline with the two "at-risk" kids was not only funny, it was nice. And Simon and Stuart could have been any two of my friends. Women will learn from this book, men will learn from it and you will laugh. It is a good, quick read that will make you upset that it's over. I just want to know why he doesn't have a new book every year like all of the other good writers. What's the deal Van? Give us some new stuff next year!! What more can you ask for from a book? Keep on keeping it real Van!!

Although not a bad book, it was a little predictable. I got a little bored in the middle, but made it thru.

Great Novel!,
By robert lee anderson jr. (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Guys in Suits: A Novel (Hardcover)
The Funny Man Does it again! If you liked his previous efforts, there's no way this one can miss. Looking at some of the reviews, it's clear that some readers just don't "get it". It's humor, man. It's supposed to be funny, give Van credit for pushing the envelope and making memorable characters. The story is unpredictable, the end satisfying. What more do you want?
