If you've played Mario Kart or Sonic Racing Transformed or Little Big Planet Karting, you'll have an idea of what to expect with Gas Guzzlers extreme. The only difference is GGE caters to the stereotypical Frat Boy with big 'sposions, potty humor and ridiculous voice overs -- imagine Duke Nukem narrating your face. You get the idea.

It begins like most racers - you're the new driver and you need to work your way up the ranks by winning races. It's pretty straightforward stuff. To help you along the way, you can upgrade your car with all manner of guns and pick up powerups along the race tracks. Like I said, if you've played any of the games mentioned at the beginning of this review, you'll know what to expect. There are several game modes including power races, knockout races, eliminator races and even team deathmatch. It's all perfectly fun even though the AI is ridiculously adept at driving and you will struggle to win a lot of races. I'm not saying I want it to be easy, but there are some races I simply cannot win no matter what I do. I can pick up every boost, every mine, ever mine/grenade and still lose by five seconds. Kind of frustrating.

You'll be racing opponents with names like Jed I. Knight, Luke Likesheet, Perry Noid and Alotta Fagina (this game isn't for youngsters, unless you feel compelled to explain what those names mean if your child asks).

The struggles I had with this game is that it runs very poorly for me. When I launch it, the game switches Windows to "Basic." The races take an EXTREMELY long time to load - I'm talking 60-90 seconds or longer and that's if they load at all. I've had to bring up the Task Manager on many occasions to force quit the game because it's not responding.

If you can get past some of the technical limitations, it's good for a laugh or two. I don't think it's a buy at $25, but if you find it on sale (I got for $8 at BundleStars), give it a go.

Oh man....this is as adrenaline pumping a racing game as I have played. In addition to the kick ♥♥♥ soundtrack, the cars are beefy in an arcadey way, the tracks are fun and often challenging, and the guns....oh man the guns!

So, there are a few different race modes (all the racing standards really), but in addition to all the standards, there is also deathmatch. DEATHMATCH! That is balls out crazy bad ###edness! There is also capture the flag (which is pretty much deathmatch with an obvious objective added).

The campaign mode (so far as I have gotten) involves moving up through the rankings while buying new cars, upgrades, weapons and of course tricking out your cars as well. Each race features three modes to choose from (typically standard race, battle (with guns), and elimination). It's as simple as that.

You can select a cheeseball voice for your racer and s/he comments throughout. I chose Arnold, and get some laughs out of it.

So, in addition to the guns (THE GUNS!!!!), there are also pickups such as smoke, oil, mines, etc....flapjacks happen to be one of them lol...that you can then drop to mess up the other drivers. There is also nitro for that extra boost. You obviously have a myriad of ways to destroy your fellow racers, not the least of which include good old fashioned ramming. You can also pick up buffs like shields and double damage along the way. All are obviously single use or timed (depending on the type of pick up).

Multiplayer features all the modes in a seven race round robin of sorts. They are team oriented, and if you play with somebody you know, you can definitely incorporate tactics into the matches to increase your odds of winning.

Gas Guzzlers Extreme has been out for about a year and a half now, but with some new DLC available for it, it has gotten something of a refresher. The basic game is a fast and furious racer with weapons. Whether you want to compare it to Mario Kart with more fire and fewer turtle shells or Twisted Metal with race tracks instead of arenas, there are pieces of truth to both comparisons.

This is a title I rather wish I had heard more about. It is a lot of fun, especially in smaller doses. It does not take itself seriously at all, with plenty of humor and some ridiculous hazards in the road to keep things lively (seriously - explosive barrels. They are so much fun to ram the other cars into). The track designs are also incredibly smart, with high risk and high reward shortcuts that remind me of Mario Kart.

This is absolutely an arcade style of racer. There are stats on the different cars, and money is earned to purchase upgraded vehicles and weapons, which serve as great progression hooks. In truth there is not a ton of innovation to be had here - we have seen just about everything Gas Guzzlers Extreme has to offer in other games prior and since. What is of note is how well done it all is.

For starters - use a controller. There are some different input options, but as with most racing games, the use of a controller just feels right. Moving along, the first race is a great taste of what is to come. You get dropped into a race with plenty of weaponry and other cars to compete against. I had no idea what I was doing right at first, but before long I understood that I had weapons for in front of and behind myself and I was able to finish in the top three (despite the fact I am not very good at most racing titles).
