5.0 out of 5 stars Red Di's "Gwaan True" CD Is Aptly Named!, October 31, 2000
By
Leigh Crutchfield (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gwaan True (Audio CD)
This initial CD by the excellent San Francisco based reggae/rock band Red Di has been many years in the making, and the time was definitely well spent! Red Di's eagerly anticipated work of ten original songs has been carefully and lovingly produced. The members began with talented songwriting and performing , and then added the finishing touches of expert sound recording, engineering and mixing. The resulting compilation is a totally smooth and stunning collection of rockin' reggae and pop, with swirling echoes of melancholy blues laced throughout the background. Singers Frank Castro and Mustapha Craig are an unforgettable vocal team that blend a contrast of styles that include Frank melodically crooning and Mustapha concurrently somtimes interjecting his own trademark patter of reggae dancehall toasting. Sweet and clear backing vocals by female guests Tamara Haynes and Karen Smith, a.k.a The Expressions Of Unity , are also a welcome addition to the musical tapestry. And , last but not least, skilled musicians Mike Tringali ( driving bass guitar), Danny Molina ( poundin' drums and shakin' percussion), Ed Elizalde ( awesome assorted guitars) and Steve Hoffman ( amazing keyboards) compliment and complete this wonderful first effort. Every selection on this CD has something very special to offer, and listing my favorites here would be like asking me which one of my children I love best - I love them all equally , but in different ways! I do believe that this CD IS aptly named "Gwaan True", and if you don't know exactly what those words mean and really wish to know, please buy it - the definition(s) are written in the liner notes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly an Amazing CD..., November 2, 2000

Having been a fan of Ragga music for many years, it was a great thrill to be introduced to Red Di shortly after my arrival in the Bay Area. They are a great bunch of guys with a tremendous amount of talent within the group. The music is amazing and definetely one for your collection, if you are a true reggae fan. Very original and lots of grooves. And if you get the chance... See them live, they put on an amazing performance.
