Format: Audio CD
After initial backing-vocals with Aretha Franklin in 1974 on her superb "Let Me In Your Life" LP for Atlantic and co-writing Ben E King's Soul smash "Supernatural Thing" in 1975 (again on Atlantic) - Gwen Guthrie went on for several years doing just that - working sessions (Sister Sledge and Luther Vandross among others). She then had her own composition "God Don't Like Ugly" featured on the huge "Roberta Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway" Soul LP in 1979 (Gwen returns to it here for her own version).

A chance meeting with Peter Tosh's friends, producers and backing band - Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare - made the trio friends. After more session work with the boys in the famous Compass Point Recording Studios in Nassau in the Bahamas - Sly and Robbie began in early 1982 on what would become her rather lovely and chipper debut LP - "Gwen Guthrie". And that's where this first-time-on-CD peach comes in...

Released March 2008 in the UK, PTG/Vinyl Masterpiece PTG 34046 breaks down as follows (51:27 minutes):

This is a CLASSIC album which contains remarkable elements of R&B, dance, funk and balladry from the late Gwen Guthrie which was released in 1982, produced by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Gwen never received the proper credit or accolades that she justly deserved for her magnificent vocal talent. She was a vastly underrated singer. A few years later, she would release a smoldering R&B single titled, "Ain't Nothing Going On But The Rent";Another Guthrie classic! To listen to her self-titled debut decades later, I can truly appreciate it even more so today! To me, it has aged wonderfully without sounding dated in a negative way. This recording is still fresh and organic like the first time I heard it. REAL musicians were used with minimal electronic or synth work to overshadow Gwen's performance, yet sounded so hip and updated for the time.Actually, the collaboration of Guthrie,Dunbar, and Shakespeare strongly indicated that they were ahead of their time---It carried none of the disco trademark sound that a lot of artists were still doing while disco was dying out. Even a song like Dance Fever is more Chic funk than Bee Gees disco.

Guthrie's self-titled debut, with only 8 tracks (original album), made such an impression on my love for R&B,dance, soul music when I was a teen.Gwen's vocals can best be described as those of a truly gifted songbird in every sense. Her approach and quality were smooth in conviction. Her vocal control was impeccable! She never resorted to pseudo-vocal tactics and phony or exaggerated affectations. It was through her own natural approach that she delivered such beautiful and harmonious melodies. This could make the listener repeat her album non-stop several times in a row.

I miss the very talented Gwen Guthrie (R.I.P. Gwen) and was very happy to find this CD with her more popular hits and some songs that I was not familiar with. The CD is a good way to catch up on Gwen!

If you like club music this is a must! A classic especially in light of the fact that ms.Guthrie is no longer with us.
