4.0 out of 5 stars balance beam
This is a great beam for begginners. My daughter is 8 yrs old and it's great for practicing handstands & cartwheels. I don't think it would be good for trying anything more difficult. It's not very heavy so it does move a little bit when she is using it. It's very lightweight & she can pick it up, fold it and put it away all by herself. I am happy w/ my purchase but...

3.0 out of 5 stars Slashes in covering. Should be shortened, integrated with mat
The covering arrived with several slashes and is developing more as it is used. The covering of the beam is a sort of suede-like material that is very thin. It arrived with a couple of lateral slashes about 3 in. long that look as if a knife or box cutter was drawn across it. The cuts are well defined and thin -- just as if they were made by a blade. Since we did not use...

My 6 yr old daughter received this balance beam for Christmas. So far, both of my children have enjoyed it. It has been a great way to burn off some energy inside during the cold northeast weather. I had compared the more expensive folding beams, and felt for the amount of use this would get the cheaper was the better option. It does not have a metal hinge, but fabric is very heavy and feels durable. I would definitely recommend this for families with young gymnasts like mine.

Got this for my 6 year old daughter last Christmas. She uses it almost every day. I like the fact that it is light and she can put it up when not in use.

I really enjoy this beam it is great for the ranges of levels 1-6 the only problem is that it slides slightly when you turn. But other than that I love it! :)

I bought this for my 5yr old who has been taking gymnastics for 1yr. She LOVES IT! She keeps jumping up and down saying "You're the best Mommy ever I love having a beam in our house!" She has been practicing since we received! IT is very light to carry, she can fold it and put it away on her own! It is very sturdy and is perfect for gaining confidence with forward rolls, cartwheels, handstands, leaps etc... My 2yr loves this too-it's a great start for her and she finally gets "her turn" to practice!

3.0 out of 5 stars Slashes in covering. Should be shortened, integrated with mat, April 8, 2011

Since we did not use any type of bladed instrument to open the box and in fact just slid it out of the box from the end, there is no way we were responsible for the slashes.

After a few weeks of use more slashes have appeared so we are fairly certain that it has something to do with manufacturing defects in the covering since the child using the beam is always supervised and does not do anything with the beam except gymnastics beam work. Sharp finger/toe nails and other objects that could cut something like the cover have been ruled out. It appears that during manufacture or shipping preparation the cover was cut by something in several places with some cuts holding together enough that the cuts do not become visible until the beam is used.

It is disappointing that the beam is just a few inches too long to fit on our 4'x8'mat. The mat is a Royal Blue Bonded Foam Gymnastic Tumbling Mat 4'x8'-2" thick Gymnastic Mat....Two Year Warranty and is a very popular size which makes one wonder why the beam does not come in a length that fits the mat exactly. The extra inches are of no advantage that we can tell and putting the beam on the mat makes the beam flex slightly so it is not as stable. Although the beam is very low to the ground and can be used on carpet or other flooring for many beam skills, a mat under the beam is necessary when practicing level 3 and 4 dismounts which end with both feet hitting the ground with significant force.
