Having played both bocci and pentanque for many years now, I know what a pentanque set looks like and it don't look like this. The games are similar but not "just like" each other as the description indicates. Petanque boules (balls) are smaller, made of metal and are manufactured within specific ranges of diameter and weight. In petanque, the boule is not "rolled". Bocci balls are rolled, as in bowling, and can be played on grass and sand. Petanque, on the other hand, is a "lofting" game. The boules are lofted towards the jack and may roll a bit or not and the game cannot be played on grass or sand as the lofted boule would bury itself in the sand or grass. The preferred playing terrain for petanque is hard packed earth as you might find on the wide walkways of an urban park, the infield of a baseball field or a dirt parking lot. I've built a petanque court (piste) on my property and made the playing surface out of compacted DG (decomposed granite). This product is definitely a bocci set and NOT a petanque set. My bocci set is made of the more durable composite material and are quite substantial in heft. Since this set's balls are made of painted wood and is quite inexpensive, I would say it is a toy for children and not for the serious bocci player.

Balls are sturdy, but the recipient of this gift told me that to play petanque each player needs two balls of the same color, so maybe this set is really for bocce ball.

Just be advised --- whatever this set may be it is NOT a pétanque set, nor is it even a proper bocce set. Lacquered wooden balls are what you COULD use for bocce, but they are only 3 inches in diameter, and standard bocce balls are over 4 inches in diameter.

But if these are not quite up to the standards for bocce, the balls are in no way whatsoever intended for pétanque and should not be used for it. Proper pétanque boules are metal & hollow, as another reviewer has already pointed out.

It mystifies me why this set would be marketed the way it is. If you are looking for a decent starter set for pétanque, there are plenty of legitimate sets available.

Purchased this game for my Geography class when we were learning about France. The students absolutely loved playing it- though who wouldn't love playing outside instead of sitting in class?
