I love the idea of this book and the author chose some interesting people to interview. However, this book majorly lacked pictures! I want to see more of the subject's lives and interiors. FYI- there is only one picture per subject (sometimes 2) and mostly exterior shots at that.

Trust-Fund "Gypsies" Gone Wild,
By J. Austin (Paris, France) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gypset Style: Jet Set + Gypsy = Gypset (Hardcover)
Wanted to love this book, read through it hoping it wouldn't disappoint, finished the book wishing it was better. I love the idea of the bohemian luxury adventure life. The author did excel at highlighting iconic figures that have shaped the gypset image. However, the people she selected from the present to represent current gypsetters seemed nothing more than spoiled trust-fund babies who like to party. I was hoping to learn of artists who broke out of middle America and found themselves on an adventure of a lifetime paved by their artistry, bravado and luck. In the end it just seemed like the book highlighted a lot of rich people who like to do drugs. Such a disappointment.

Such a great coffee table book! I want so desperately to be a Gypsetter after looking through this book-- to lead the idealized gypsy lifestyle, glamorously traveling and living stylishly yet simply, hopping flights to stay with friends all over the world, without responsibilities.... what a dream. although the author can sound pretentious, claiming to have led such an idyllic lifestyle herself, the lush images are inspirational for anyone interested in style, especially romantic bohemian 1960s-70s fashion, decor and lifestyle. If a book can be sexy, this is one SEXY BOOK.

Beautiful, interesting, and inspiring book. The photos really capture the essence of Gypset folks. The only drawback? Be prepared to envy the amazing freedom, worldlyness, and chic-ness of this experiential bohemian lifestyle.

If you've got any hankering for bohemian, ethnic, global traveller style pictures, photos and thoughts, here is where you'll find them. This book seems pretty niche, but the topic will appeal to lots of people for different reasons. There are great lashings of fashion, travel, music, lifestyle and art, as well as a surprising dose of history - the history of the gypsy people and the gypsy movement as it was coopted by artists and travellers around the globe. Fascinating reading, and while it is relatively text heavy, the images included have been selected with great restraint. Each one is very beautiful and evocative. The image of Talitha Getty on a Morroccan roof will give me a jolt every time I see it.

The photos are amazing. The people (especially the women) discussed were inspiring. I tell all my friends about it.

I reviewed this book negatively once here, and it was removed. I repeat, the book does nothing to ameliorate the real-life condition of Gypsies, whom both the UN and the EU list as facing Europe's most extreme racism, unemployment and abysmal health and housing conditions. Instead it exploits the fantasy, privileged jet-setting fashion magazine image. Its brief attempt to provide an overview of our history is quite wrong. The situation of Roma today is in a state of crisis, but it can never be taken seriously if we as a people aren't taken seriously. The words "Gypsy" and "Romany" are proper nouns by the way. They require capital initial letters. Ian Hancock
