Gypsies of Britain: an introduction to their history, June 11, 2000
This review is from: Gypsies of Britain (Hardcover)
I am very happy with this book. It provided exactly what I was looking for: a chronological tracking of Gypsy migration from their origins in India, through the Middle East and into Europe and Britain. However, it is written in a very scholarly tone and is somewhat difficult to follow at times. The author does give additional sources for locating further information, but all in all Vesey-Fitzgerald did a fine job overviewing the topics covered which include: early and recent history, taboos, marriage, death and burial, social organization, fortune-telling, medicinal practices, and descriptions of the fabled Gypsies wagons. A lengthy bibliography is also included.
