As a historian, I have to choose my books wisely, especially when I am referring them to another. For the past several years, I have been studying the history and culture of Gypsies, and have read several dozen books on the subject. This work, by far, has remained my favourite. Not the type of book used in a dissertation, Gypsies of the World is nevertheless a constant pleasure, and a reminder of why I am so fond of studying the marvelous race known as the Romani. The book traces the path of Gypsy migrations from their homeland in India and Afghanistan through the Middle-East, across the Bosporus to Europe, and to the tips of Spain and Britain. It is the account of the author's travels through these lands, accompanied by some helpful and some not so helpful guides. Throughout, snippets of historical and cultural anecdotes remind us of the well-seasoned traditions of these people. The pictures are, for lack of a better word, breath-taking.
