'Oh, the weather out side is....' very hot and not the least bit suggestive of Christmas, but here is an antidote for all the antagonistic heat and grumpy world outside - A VERY GYPSY CHRISTMAS! Yes, it actually is time to start thinking of things seasonal and this new set of songs as recorded live by Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack is about as comfortable a way to begin as there could be. Munro is a highly acclaimed New York jazz guitarist, composer and arranger. Here he shines his light on his longstanding passion for the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli whose tradition of gypsy is irresistible.
La Pompe Attack, as his unique group is called, consists of himself - Doug Munro - on guitar, Ken Peplowski, clarinet, Howie Bujese, violin, Michael Goetz, bass, and Ernie Pugliese, guitar. And as a bonus he adds the considerable vocal talents of young Cyrille-Aimee Daudel who simply makes 'The Christmas Song', 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town,' and 'Christmas Time is Here' her own. The group is solid, with Munro the matrix from which all the others collaborate. For instance, Ken Peplowski offers a heartfelt ballade version of a clarinet solo on 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'.
The other tracks include the oldies but goodies including 'Sleigh Ride', 'I'll be Home for Christmas', to the ancient tunes of 'O Come O Come Emmanuel', 'Greensleeves', and 'O Tannenbaum' to the expected carols (but not in these versions!) of 'Silent Night', 'Little Town of Bethlehem', 'We Three Kings', etc. The sounds are bouncy and in the swinging style of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club of France. This is an infectious approach to a much loved, much needed season because 'We need a little Christmas, right this very minute...etc.' Grady Harp, August 11
