this a great acoustic cd the melodies are awesome, the vocals are great, this is not an electric guitar album, so there is not alot of killer schenker solos. But it is a schenker cd with alot of creativity and feeling, so if you are a schenker fan like I am, and you love Gary Barden then you should get the cd.For people who call this elevator music, why buy it? It is acoustic.I own everything Schenker has ever made in his life, except for the one when he was 11 in his first band.I think he is the greatest guitar player on the face of the earth.

Even More Stylistic Diversity from Michael Schenker et al,
By
This review is from: Gipsy Lady (Audio CD)
Gipsy Lady takes twelve of the fourteen tracks to be found on Thank You 4 and completely reworks them into new tracks. It is not at all true to say that this album is 'Thank You 4 plus vocals', since there are new guitar parts, keyboard parts, bass parts and percussion parts added as well - and that's after sometimes considerable rearrangement of the original material. The result is a great mellow pop-rock album that is very easy listening, and will appeal to non-rockers as well. Gary Barden's vocals are great. Barden is like the William Shattner of the rock-vocals world - absolute proof of the indispensability of good quality ham. Perhaps the album should be labelled Schenker-Barden-Voss, since Michael Voss has clearly done much of the re-arrangement. Barden and Voss, of course, worked together in the execellent rock-band, Silver, as well as on some of Barden's solo material. Thus, Gipsy Lady is just a little bit like an acoustic 'Silver' album - except that the basic musical frameworks all come from Schenker's billiant Thank You material. The acoustic soloing is also Schenker, and largely preserved from the earlier project. Well done lads!

I bought the "Thank you 4 . . ." album and was a pleasantly surprised at the melodies against those songs. Some felt a bit on the cheezey side at first, but after a few listens I think this is an awesome album. I love it!

Very pleased with this purchase. This is a must have for the acoustic Schenker collector. Added bonus that he is working with Gary Barden again. It is everything you would expect to hear from Schenker regarding his guitar work (great hooks, precision and melody). My first listen was interesting in that Gary sings much lower on most of the tracks vs his early MSG days. One soon forgets about this and is sucked into the mechanics of the songs. There are some truely great vocal melodies over the music (way to go Gary) which creates some very dramatic moments. The picture on the back of the cover shows Gary and Michael (playing his Dean V) in what appears to be a live setting. This is not a Marshall/V rock and roll album. I was sprised that this release is not offered on CD. Luckily I still have a functioning turntable.

Schenker/Barden version of MSG is always great rock n roll but this kind of acoustic set w/drums
is not what most fans expect but it's great. The songs are melodic and catchy with awesome guitar work as usual and Barden's vocals and lyrics match perfectly. After hearing In Midst of Beauty & seeing them live last year I got this expecting just what is it. good. If you like slower MSG or UFO songs you should like this. It's not perfect but damn close & better than most. Best songs are Dance Lady Gipsy, Fight for Freedom and Can't Live on Love Alone standing out. Great stuff.

Barden brings some urgency to Schenker's acoustic work...,

Just a real enoyable record from the voice of Michael's best ever MSG line up along with a great acoustic based recording. Guitar takes a back seat to Gary's great melodies and rock and roll urgency. But just barely.
Michael's previous acoustic records (especially the 2nd) have been real showcases for his personal ability, but here are real songs, with moving choruses, great bridges, backing vocals and a real band feel. My first listen left me with a mellow feeling, but the next few listens reveal a real emotional rock record in an Unplugged kind of format. It's growing on me and I can't wait to seeing this live in an acoustic format after all the great electric sets I've already seen. (Don't get me wrong, I love them..) Both Michael and Gary are in excellent voice here...just get it...a worthy MS record and one of the highlights of his career...and as a fan of 25 years I know what I am writing about...

I bought the vinyl version ot this album. Schenker's guitar playing is sharp and focused. He does not run off of with a lot of riffs. It is a collaborate effort between Schenker and Barton. After about 4 plays I fell in love with this album. I can't say if the cd version would be as sharp as the vinyl vesion but Schenker's guitar playing is smooth and controlled but beautiful. If you like Schenker's mellow songs then buy this music. The singing is good on this record and together the towm make this a great record.

Elevator Jams,

These are the guys that cranked out "Attack of the Mad Axeman" and "On and On" right? No I wasn't expecting that on an acoustic album but when my daughter asks "Dad when did you start listening to elevator music"?.... I know there is a problem. I've been a fan of Michael since the Ford administration and have never been disappointed....well until this one. The album cover should of been a give away and I admit I grabbed this one based on the "Midst of Beauty" album which is a five star classic expecting to hear toned down acoustic versions of something like that.....nope. Nothing wrong with the tunes at all ....just not what I expected. Imagine Michael and Gary playing at an upscale wedding in Mexico City and this is perfect for that setting. Kind of a south of the border cheesy feel to it.
Hey I love these guys. Just not this album. Remember you have been warned. |
