4.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous!, March 23, 2005
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
In Bedfordshire, England, 1785, a dying gypsy woman gave birth to Lord Alex' illegitimate son and named him Dante. Alex never knew about Dante, because his own father (the Marquis of Alston a.k.a. Lord Alston) kept the information from him. Lord Alston had Dante's Romany grandparents, Sandor and Carlotta, raise the child. Lord Alston gave them gold to help care for Dante and insisted that Dante be sent to Cambridge at age sixteen.

Now, in 1813, Lord Alston wishes he had spent more time with his grandson, no matter Dante's heritage. Lord Alex had died ten years before with no children. Thus Lord Alston's nephew, Calvin, is next in line for the title. But Lord Alston did not trust Lord Calvin with the family fortune. Calvin gambled too often and spent money he did not have. Therefore, Lord Alston changes his will and makes Dante his heir. In a codicil of the will, Lord Alston demands that Dante wed Lady Esme Harcourt within six months of becoming the new Marquis of Alston.

As Dante steals a kiss from the beautiful lady at a country fair, he has no idea that her name is Lady Esme or that he is to meet her again in the near future. Dante intended to deny the title, wealth, and estate that his English grandfather is pushing on him. However, when Lord Alston is murdered and set up to look like suicide, Dante cannot let the murder of his kin go unpunished. He will accept the title and use everything in his power to locate the killer. As for Lady Esme, no matter how prejudiced she may be toward gypsies, she WILL become his wife. After all, she has already proven that she is not immune to his charms.

**** This story is filled with obstacles for the main characters to overcome, as well as danger, suspense, mystery, and romance. Author Connie Mason does an excellent job of making the characters come alive. Marvelous! ****

5.0 out of 5 stars solid Georgian amateur sleuth romance, April 27, 2005
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1785 England, a gypsy woman dies in childbirth, but the boy Dante, sired by an aristocrat, survives. His grandfather the Marquis of Alston hides the birth of Dante from his son, Alex, the lad's biological father and pays the kid's maternal grandparents to raise him.

Lord Alston regrets his decision of three decades ago; his son died ten years ago with no other heir and his nephew Calvin is a gambling wastrel. Alston knows that if Calvin becomes Marquis, the proud name will quickly dissolve into bankruptcy. A desperate Alston modifies his will recognizing Dante as heir with the stipulation that he marry Lady Esme Harcourt within six months of gaining the title.

Dante wants nothing to do with his paternal grandfather and his title. However, when someone kills Lord Alston, Dante accepts this as a blood debt; he needs the title to walk in the exclusive circles he must step into to complete his quest of bringing the killer to Romany justice. Dante accepts the rider that Lady Esme be his wife especially since he has previously tasted her lips though he loathes that she is a purebred aristocrat; in turns Esme scorns gypsies.

This solid Georgian amateur sleuth romance is loaded with action but it is the lead couple who makes the tale so much fun to read. Dante and Esme may love each other, but each is loaded down with the heavy chains of prejudice. He detests the upper crust while she disdains the Romany. As they fall in love, Dante's investigation leans towards Calvin as the prime suspect but he has new concerns when he places his beloved Esme in danger. Fans will enjoy Connie Mason's delightful landlubber historical tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gypsy Lover, December 25, 2005
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Dante's life begins as the rejected, Romany, illegitimate grandson of an English nobleman.Yet, his grandfather does pay for his education, and when the time comes, asks him to be his heir. Following the old man's murder, Dante joins English society, reluctantly. The ton's main appeal lies in his promised bride, Esme Harcourt, a young woman who was attracted to him when all she saw was a wild gypsy, but turned away from the charismatic young man. Now, she is a young lady who does not know whether to follow her heart or head. Her heart and body want Dante, but is he a killer who only wants her to fulfill the conditions of a will, or does he love her as much as she unwillingly loves him? With romantic rivals trying to deter them both, Esme and Dante will have to fight for the truth and for love, but it is a fight worth winning.

Dante is a compelling hero who leaps off the page. He is a true alpha hero. Though Esme seems a bit weak willed, this is a classic romance that lives up to the attractive cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!, May 16, 2005
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Connie does it once again! This book is fresh and new and I could not put it down.
The plot is very good and the ending a surprise.
Dante is a very sexy man that screams lust and strength. I did have a problem with Esme, his lady. She was such a snob that I wanted to slap her and disliked her until almost the end. But, she did come to her senses. Thank Goodness!
Great Book! READ IT! It's a keeper!

1.0 out of 5 stars Heroine is too prejudiced!!!, October 3, 2006
By
Romance Reader (Pounding Mill, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Heroine constantly tells the hero that she hates him because he is a gypsy. Good Lord what is wrong with this woman!! The gypsy dude is so hot!! but she constantly refuses him for no other reason than for him being a filthy gyspy (yes she really said that) Fought constatly with the hero which is why I traded this book off not worth the money i paid for it I bought it hoping that it would be as good as The Pirate Prince but sadly no. Just too much arguing and bitching and why oh why do authors think they have to have that in a book for it to sell? Don't know cause after that I refuse to buy her other books and the latest one out well just the summary on the back of the book made me steer clear. One star for again that hot guy on cover but do not buy this book because of that, you have been warned!

2.0 out of 5 stars Crappy Heroine, June 5, 2010
By
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Gypsy Lover has a romantic sexy hero. Unfortunately, the heroine is predjudiced against gypsies - even after the hero has rocked her world three times! Until almost the last 1/3 of the book, she thinks that Dante is beneath her and can't marry him. But that doesn't stop her from getting it on with him. The sex scenes were pretty hot, too bad it wasn't with another female. I would not bother to buy this book - check it out at the library. A better book from Connie Mason is the Rogue and the Hellion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, May 17, 2005
This review is from: Gypsy Lover (Leisure Historical Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love how Mrs. Mason explores different cultures and brings them to life in her books. I liked the gypsy theme and background info was cool. The characters were very colorful and I really liked the grandparents. Some of the conversations were kinda corney and I thought the hero was a man, but could have been more manly. Yes, he can fight, but heros are suppose to be able to fight, shoot and fence. He was an awesome hero, no doubt about it though. I liked it.
