This game is boring without ROB, but when you have him, Its awesome just to see it work. The ROB system for this game uses spinning Gyros to press down the buttons. It was slow paced, but a real show to watch.
What makes this game special though, is that even if you dont own a ROB, you can open this game up, reverse the large black peice ,exclusive to this games mechanics, switch it upside down, and play Famicon games using the peice. It's hard to explain, but im sure you can find it on the internet.
Overall, dont buy unless you have access to either ROB, or famicon games.

Gyromite is one of the NES launch titles made in 1985.

It plays just like as if it was a classic arcade game, mainly because the goal and gameplay were simple: Collect all of the dynamite in the level to move on by moving across platforms and climbing ladders while avoiding dinosaurs.

There is bait for the dinosaurs, fortunately, and if they eat the food, then you can walk by without dying.

The main concept, however, is really interesting and innovative for its time. If you have R.O.B (Robotic Operating Buddy), then that peripheral can sorta help you out in this game. R.O.B's purpose in this game is that it can pick up and drop "gyros" on blue or red buttons. That way, the red and blue pipes in the game can move. The gyro must remain atop the button, though, because if it falls off, then the pipe moves back.

R.O.B doesn't work too well, though. It's noisy and slow. There are times where that can have you trapped.

Thankfully, you don't need R.O.B. You can also have a second player control the pipes instead. In fact, the 2-Player mode has you and your friend alternate roles each level.

Overall, this is one heck of a classic. Despite its innovation, it takes you back to the arcades in a way.

I was very lucky to have the NES back when I was growing up. I received it as a Christmas present and it happened to be the Deluxe Edition: the console, two controllers, the Zapper, a giant fold out poster and two games (Gyromite and Duck Hunt.) While Duck Hunt was a cool idea, I always played Gyromite a lot more. It is an average game in every way, but it was fun at the same time.

In Gyromite, the game featured two modes of play. The first mode had you control a scientist who has to escape his laboratory filled with mutant birds. The laboratory is filled with about 40 maze like stages blocked by blue and pink pillars. While using R.O.B. as a second player, you'd watch him move around and drop spinning gyroscopes onto the buttons of the second controller. Doing so meant seeing the colored pillars move up or down (B button for the blue ones, A button for the pink ones.) Basically, get him from point A to B without him running into the mutant birds or getting squashed by a pillar before time runs out. When you complete the final stage, the game just sends you back to the first stage but the timer runs down faster as do the mutant birds. The second mode had you control the same scientist but now he is sleepwalking. This means you can't control him at all but he must walk from the beginning to the end of the stage without him waking up or getting squashed or bitten. There are like more than 20 stages in this mode and they are different from what you saw in the first mode. Again, when you beat the final stage in this mode, the game sends you back to the first stage with the scientist walking faster.

The PROS: This game was fun despite being limited in almost all areas. Using R.O.B was a novel idea at first and you could have bought two other games that also "required" the robot. The game isn't too hard but you'd have to figure out the best way to get out of the mazes while you were still alive. And you had two modes to play through, doubling the life of the game.

The CONS: Like I said before, it's an average game. Don't expect to be wowed by the graphics, music or sound effects. As for the music, you'll hear the same song in the first mode for all of the 40 plus stages. The second mode had a different song playing through all 20 plus stages so there was a little bit of variety when it came to the music...barely. And contrary to what you heard, it WAS possible to play the game without using R.O.B. All you had to do was take over for R.O.B. and push the buttons to lift or lower the pillars yourself. Trust me, I did it.

Gyromite was a novel but average game made just so you had an excuse to use the robot. It was fun and maybe Nintendo will release an updated version with a new gimmick to play it. R.O.B. wasn't totally forgotten as he made cameo appearances in the Smash Bros games and even was a selectable fighter in Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii. Until then, we may never see a game like Gyromite ever again.

This is one of 2 games made to use with R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) Poor Nintendo wanted to get their system into stores before Christmas. Well, Unlicensed games for the Atari and the complex E.T. game ruined any chance. So Nintendo bundled A cool Robot created 2 interactive games...and sadly that was the end of that (Not for Nintendo, because stores started to carry video games, just for R.O.B.). I do not own a R.O.B. You can play this game without one. But that's the whole point is to do it with another companion.
P.S. I only purchased this game at the time in hopes that it was an original from Japan, which means it was originally a Famicom (family computer-Japanese NES) game placed with a pin convert so you can play it in the NES(Nintendo). The version I got was a later one made just for the NES.

I didnt no it at the time, but this game was supposed to be played with the ROB robot thingy.
