Product Description

Amazon.com Hands-On Review

H.H. Scott's stylish, compact, and affordable MagicSet AM/FM dual-alarm clock offers the ultimate in time keeping: perfect time, all the time. Automatic time setting coupled with the unit's slender form makes the SCR110 a perfect travel or bedside companion.

"Perfect time"? Yep. The SCR110's internal receiver decodes the U.S. Atomic Clock's radio signal and automatically sets the time for you--it even automatically adjusts for time changes like daylight savings and leap year, as well as time-zone changes. And the time keeping is hyperaccurate: the U.S. Atomic Clock will neither gain nor lose a full second across 20 million years. The MagicSet delivers this same precision.

Out of the box, this clock is a cinch to setup. You begin by setting it to receive the "atomic" signal from the Fort Collins in Boulder, Colorado. Once it's synchronized, you won't need to worry about setting the clock again. The signal will calibrate the MagicSet throughout the day. Be aware, however, that reception of the radio signal is guaranteed only in the 48 continental states and southern Canada.

The MagicSet features a dual-alarm system that's easily programmed using its intuitive front panel controls. Each alarm offers settings for every day, weekday only, or weekend only. You can wake to the radio or to a graduated-tone alarm, which starts quietly and gets louder. You can also snooze for up to 60 minutes after your wake-up time and fall asleep to the radio with a sleep timer.

Along with the convenience of never having to set your clock again, the MagicSet features a time display that's easy to read, and a date display that shows the day of the week. Brightness controls let you adjust the level to high or low. Even on low, though, it tends to be bright.

With respect to audio, the MagicSet is simply a basic clock radio. Its tuner is analog AM/FM. There are no station presets. The MagicSet doesn't include a CD player, cassette deck, or headphone jack. The speaker is monaural, but the sound is quite good.

Ultimately, the MagicSet is about precision timekeeping, and the convenience of never again needing to set your clock, reset your clock, or wonder if it's on time. And it delivers, along with dual alarms and a great, at-a-glance display. --Heidi Wartelle

Pros:

  • You'll never have to set your clock again
  • Auto-adjusts for seasonal time changes
  • Dual alarms
  • Large, easy-to-read display

Cons:

  • No tuner presets
  • No CD player
  • Monaural sound
  • Slightly overbright display

From the manufacturer

The MagicSet clock is accurate to within one second every million years. The beautiful sleek design and great sounding AM/FM radio will complement any room in your home.

The time and date are automatically set by the U.S. atomic clock, so it's accuracy is ensured. It automatically adjusts for daylight saving/standard time and leap year, and features weekday only, weekend only or everyday alarm settings. For convenience, the MagicSet clock also has dual alarm settings, a high/low display dimmer, and sleep and snooze functions.

You'll always be on time with the MagicSet clock. Use it to set all the clocks in your home, knowing that it is the one clock radio that will always be accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars always on time, November 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: H.H. Scott SCR110 Atomic Clock Radio (Electronics)
This atomic clock is great. Anytime the power goes out or it is moved for any reason this clock resets its self to the right time, not only the right time but to the atomic clock in Denver. It also adjust to daylight savings time and leap year. If you use a back up 9 volt battery it even keeps your dual alarms set incase of a power outage. I really like the style and the sound quality is very good. This is the lowest price I have seen for an atomic clock with all the features the Scott SCR110 has. Know I have no excuse for being late.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good alarm functionality, Atomic clock not so much, January 20, 2002

I have used the clock for just over a month. Its best feature is the separate weekend/weekday alarm settings. One can set either alarm to be active on weekdays only, weekends only, or every day. I was a little disappointed that the graduwake functionality applies only to the buzzer alarm, not to the radio. All other features are secondary to me.

Atomic clock: I live near Madison, Wisconsin. Out of the box the clock refused to synchronize with the atomic clock in Colorado. After waiting a couple of days, I finally set the time and date myself. A small light indicates whether the clock has been able to synchronize with the atomic clock within the last 24 hours. The night after I set the time, it finally synchronized. It seems to makes its connection every third or fourth day. I was hoping that it would reset the time after power outages and the like, but I've given up hope. I don't see how automatically changing the time 3 days after daylight savings time starts will help much either. Also, since the atomic synchonization is a highly touted feature, I don't understand the 1 foot antenna cable; a longer cable would permit better reception adjustment. A final irony: All pictures on its box clearly show a clock that has not synchronized within the last 24 hours!

Display: The green display is incredibly bright - brighter than most night-lights, even in the dim setting. This is partly because it not only displays the time, but the date. I placed 2 layers of a window tinting film over the display and it is much more tolerable. One can still read it quite handily in a brightly lit room, although perhaps not in direct sunlight any more.

Tuner: I have no complaints about the dial tuner, but I live close to all stations of interest.

Sound: This is nothing more than a clock radio.

In summary, if the you are lucky enough to live within synchronization distance of Colorado, this clock is pretty cool for its accuracy. For me, the alarm functionality was paramount. I would not pay its list price ..., but half that makes it worth while.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just To Bright, April 29, 2001

This review is from: H.H. Scott SCR110 Atomic Clock Radio (Electronics)
Initially I was quite happy as within probably 4 minutes of plugging it in it correctly set the time and date. Also if you set the wrong time it will correct that within just a matter of minutes. So for an accurate clock this is fine.

The main reason that I returned this clock to Amazon was simply that the clock is to bright. The LCD display has a bright and dim setting. However the dim setting is much to bright. My wife and I were amazed at how it lit the whole room up. We like to sleep in a fairly dark room and found ourselves covering up the display just to get the room dark.

Also the radio has a good sound but I thought the analog tuning wheel was a little to retro and sort of cheap. If you want to change the station you feel like you just stepped back into 1980.

Currently I am searching for an atomic clock with a very dim setting for night and possibly digital tuning for the radio or at least some preset buttons to change stations.
