5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging reading
I have been resting following some surgery and this has been the ticket. Alan Lewrie is a rascal with a conscience which makes for a very human and engaging person. Lambdin maintains a good balance between nautical exactness\detail and yet keeps the story interesting and cohesive. I recommend the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Scotty! When's the translator going to be back on line!
This is the sixth book I have read in this series and while I found the first five enjoyable, this has turned into a LABOR !! Why all the FRENCH ??? Once cast ashore it seems that more and more of the story is told as French dialogue. Enough is enough!! Were this a TV show or a movie, people would be walking out or changing the channel!!
And to make it worse, in many...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Cockrel, September 9, 2009
This review is from: H.M.S. Cockerel: The Alan Lewrie Naval Adventures #6 (Paperback)
This book is a successful continuation in the Lewrie Series. It stands alone well but the character, as developed in the earlier books, gives insight to the reader of why Lambdin thinks and acts as he does. I enjoyed more because of the prvious books

I've been stuck in the British Royal Navy, Napoleanic wars era ever since the Master and Commander movie. I've read all the major series, O'Brian, Forrester, and Marryat. Amazon has been a great way to discover writers of similar series, and fill in when the library falls short (then you can donate the book when you're done). Dewey Lambdin has become a favourite. I also like the full size paper back format.

And to make it worse, in many cases you have this attempt to write English with a French accent. Makes it almost intolerable to read, give one a headache. Sorry, but this is a 2 star dud.

I did not like this one as well as the first 5....too much French and heavy on ZE accent.....when you have to struggle to figure out what ZE characters 'R saying to each other..then it is not pleasurable reading.....as usual the story is good....but 'ard to follow in this effort......onward to #7.....
